Just got a BlueRay PMD and so wondering what to do with my old DVD one. Opening it up shows the optical drive is a standard full size laptop SATA one. If I get a caddy this should allow me to install a laptop hard drive in there and have a second full speed SATA hard disk.

Attached is the image of the connector. This should be faster than any USB external HD right?

Seems like there's not much love for the Power Media dock :)
I got this working in the end. Stuck a 7200rpm 1tb hard disk in there, and the results are:
    Read speed 130mb
    Write speed 18mb

So for anyone else interested, this is a straight forward swap! The optical drive bay adapter is a 12.7mm one (not the 9.5mm one that's commonly sold for macs).
