If processor and rest of specs are the same between the Z and SR, how much of a gaming performance difference are we talking here between the
    Nvidia 9300m 256mb and the ATI 3470 128mb?

this thread might provide some interesting reading for you. Long story short: The 3470 is better than the 9300M, but nobody knows exactly how much, since there aren't benchmarks of the 3470 compared to the 9300M in the same system (i.e. same CPU, RAM, etc.).

If it's the VRAM concerning you, check this post I just made in the SR owners lounge. Since both 9300M and 3470 have a 64-bit bus, the extra VRAM probably won't make that much of a difference.

actually depending on which model you get from zony on the Z, since one has the 128 9300, whereas the other has a 256 9300.

    540 - 128
    590 - 256

the ati is 256 ddr3 ram. not sure which one has the faster clock speed. the nvidia has a 550Mhz core speed, whereas the ati has 680Mhz.

my guess is the ati would be slightly faster, but neither card are really meant for any heavy gaming.

Nah, the ATI in the SR is 128 mb GDDR3 VRam.

    Unfortunately. xD

I think most of the synthetic benchmarks are usually taken with GDDR3 that are found on review sites, and etc.

But still, the bit bus on both models of the 9300M are going to be the same.... so I think the core speed will make a bit of a difference, but not the Vram.

hmm I thought the SR came with the ATI in canada, but it does not, my bad. d4mn. Too bad the SR doesn't come with the 256 one, would be a nice little machine.

Yeah, I agree. It would be absolutely perfect with 256, but I'm sure there's some reason (Maybe heat). (It's close enough for me, I don't play entirely challenging games anyway. Most of them are older.)

That is too bad to hear about Canada though. Maybe soon they'll release one with an ATI card....

aye heat is probably an issue, or perhaps they didn't want to eclipse the FW with the ati or the Z with the nvidia?

Hmm, that is a good point. That perhaps is, but the problem is that people are buying the SR because they want a smaller laptop at the sacrifice of a non Hi-Color screen and a smaller screen resolution.

I think they are meant for entirely different markets... Eh.

But maybe.... just to be fair to their other laptops. I could see that being viable.

Nvidia is getting very bad rep over their mobile video fiasco. They've admitted to the 8000 series line being bad but still refuse to answer on the 9000 line. And I love their solution, they will fix it only when it breaks.
So, every nvidia based notebook owner is carrying a time-bomb.
I have a machine with 8400M which runs ay 65 C idle and have already replaced the motherboard once.
I'd stay away from nvidia till they get their act together.
