Because the PS3Slim supports bitstream output which the old one does not.

    yeah I know...
but it works even in fat ps3 but in linear PCM ..

Decoding the audio at the source is actually better than having the ability to bitstream high-resolution soundtracks, since it means even people with older HDMI-capable receivers can enjoy the high quality audio.

receiver won't light up the pretty DTS-HD Master Audio logo, but who cares--you still get the same great sound.

Audio-wise, what's not so nice is giving up the ability to play SACDs, which the newer PS3s lack.
(Never mind that it has only two USB ports, no card slot, can't play PS2 games, and can't run Linux.)

Unless you had a third generation PS3 (which is almost as dumbed down as the slim), I'd say you made a bad bargain. 60 GB NTSC PS3s go for over $500 used.

I've tried everything.. everything is still coming out 2channel stereo via the HDMI port on my Z610 under Win7. I'm thinking we're just stuck using a preliminary driver until they give us something more final. I'm still using my Z610 to watch hi-def movies in my living room surround sound big-screen setup.. It doesn't really bother me once you get into the movie but it would be nice to have some 5.1 channel output soon :/

    What exactly is your problem?

AC3 and DTS pass through over HDMI works.

Everything coming from my Z comes over the HDMI as 2-channel stereo. I have many 5.1 Dolby Surround MKV videos, etc. that I play on my Z. I even have a few 5.1 wmv files for testing and when those audio test files get to Rear Left and Rear right, it's still coming from my front speakers. And my receiver is set up properly, no doubts about that.

If someone's discovered how to fix this, or if there's newer drivers I must have missed could someone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks,

    Jay

Using the Shark007 codec pack, Windows Media Player.. also tried VLC and no difference. I don't want to use VLC anyways as it doesn't support any hardware video decoding support. Any other players I should try? Shark007 codec pack installed everything, including AC3Filter, and other utilties.. I played around with all the sound settings and it didn't seem to make a difference.

I use a USB dongle as my VGN-FW450J does not have SPDIF output, my USB dongle does and it sends the digital signal to my receiver. Plays DTS and DD with no problems. I find no need for 7.1 decoding since I have virtual 7.1

WMP in Win7 64B plays DTS, DD fine over HDMI on my Z (DTS or DD is decoded in my AV Receiver and displayed). No need to install some codecs packs or something else.

hahah of course u wil not get 5.1 sound output on YOUR FILES stored in your Drive... !
We talking about actual FROM Discs to play DTS /DD ...
    But
you want to play your files downloaded and so IN THAT CASE you need to have downloaded VERY LATEST audio and video codecs
    AND
you need them PROPERLY configure and set it up where audio and channels go paas trough ..
you need to config. which audio codecs will be associated with which player .. ! tht you said VLC lan player is rubbish that you are veery wrong!
that is actualy the best player it has some codecs implemented already in package they even support MPEG-2 and M2TS (mpeg-2 transport stream so blu-ray)
I have couple movies or documentaries and plenty they are MKV file window WMP will not lay them because i dont have it associated codecs with wmp and vlc will play it straight away without configure.
ok back to audio video codecs ..
mostly when installing codecs plenty people don't look in custom when they installing them there is actual selection and association all kinds of codecs
you can associate automatically them with windows media player or for example shark codecs or mega codec pack has media player classic in package and they usually associating codecs to that player Or you can then manually associate audio and video codecs with any player what u want ... I know its difficult ..
some one year ago i tried to watch downloaded film divx over the receiver and it says 5.1 audio etc and i couldnt play it ..
I went to one of the audio codecs ACfilter and you HAVE to configure or set it up how and where you want to send that audio track! there is usualy SPDI/F and its disabled .. need to enable it then set how many speakers you have you can configurate volume leveling you can force Dolby pro logic so that means whatever you play it wll enable DD or pro logic (never-DTS may be there could be neo 24 or 96 but i dont think so ..
I already actually sent email to ac3 filter team why they dont start make HDMI option .. they never replied .. it could be linked with SPDIF

uff I know with audio /video codecs you really need take time and set it up correctly never install mga codec pack with sharks or with any other pack makers othervise everything will mix up ant will be messed up totally

What the heck are you babbling about, and why shouldn't someone be able to play the DTS/DD 5.1 tracks from a MKV file or any other container stored on their hdd? This isn't a fuctionality limited to disc playback. If you read what I said, you'd realize already had the correct and proper codec packages/filters already installed.

    Take this real-life scenario:

My buddy has a Dell XPS with HDMI out on Windows7 using the same exact codec package as I am, playing the same exact MKV movie.. Using MY receiver his laptop was passing DD 5.1 whereas my Sony Z does not pass DD 5.1 using the SAME EXACT PROGRAMS/CODECS. Both WMP.

So, obviously this is a hardware or software problem with the Sony Z.. it's not because I'm not using the right codec pack or player, I used the same exact programs/codecs on his machine.

There is no software or hardwareprobleme on the Sony Z.

It must be your configuration as it is working perfectly on the Vaio Z!

Only the some Codecs says nothing - it's the configuration of the codec that matters!

You can play DD5.1 via passtrough or as PCM. Passtrough works flawless.
