I found the Engadget "review" a little troubling. What kind of battery life have people managed to get out of it? :(

And also, how does having a standard 5200rpm HDD effect it?

Well, I got the 590UAB today and with the standard battery on Stamina and tweaking some stuff, it estimated 5 hours give or take. It seems to be right - it says 28% with 1:16 to go.

Considering mine has the two SSDs, I'd say that's pretty darn good. With most laptops, extended batteries will get you maybe 5 - 6 hours.

I get about 4:30 hours in stamina mode and the brightness set to half with the power plan set to "balanced". This is with the 1376x768 screen and 2.26 processor

i honestly think engadget did not run the tests, i think they only checked the meter and took it for granted

whenever i unplug or login to my laptop on batteries, it shows me a certain level of battery and gradually starts increasing

i was worried about this too, but i got at least 4 hours with wifi on, browsing messaging and with 5/8 of the brightness, and the battery had still plenty left

With the 6-cell I can confirm I get 4 to 4.5 hours of battery life at -2 Brightness and stamina mode under moderate web, music, and I/O tasks.

    I have the extended battery

DVD/CD drive off, FireWire Off, Stamina Mode, Bluetooth Off, Moderate Wifi Use, Underclocked CPU, Stamina Mode, screen brightness 60%, clean install, 54 processes at startup, 60 running currently

I got 9 hrs easily, and vista estimates another 2-3 hrs for me.

Wow that is impressive, to say the least. Could you also give us a figure of how much the Z lasts in normal and extreme (everything on) usage with the extended battery?

    Thanks

The battery estimate Vista gives is pretty useless. I can get roughly 5 hours max in stamina doing word processing etc... In speed with WANN on I get about 2:30.

I find that on my SZ the battery estimation is pretty accurate.

And on my old Medion its (on the now dreadful battery) resonably accurate too.

The accuracy depends on your computer usage.
If your usage is fairly consistent you will get a good battery life - if you use it little, then go into defragmenting and shifting files at the same time wihile using WWAN, WLAN and bluetooth while listening too music, well good night :D
I think you'll get the picture.
Battery "time/life" left is an estimate based on your usage since you switched to battery.
Some people get over 5 hours out of their SZ. I'd say I can get about 3-4 hours out of 80% charge and the battery indicator is pretty accurate on that count.

I get between 4 and 5 hours depending on what I'm doing. It looks like WWAN uses less power than WLAN... But it could be an illusion.

The WWAN cellular modem should use less power than WLAN. Based on my experience cell phones almost always use more power on wifi than using a 3G data connection. I see no reason that the WWAN modem should be any different.

That is funny because with my laptop the SZ7/C my battery life is much better surfing over wifi compared to using 3G mobile broadband. I use a sim in my laptop for mobile broaband. Over wifi i can get slightly over 6 hours battery life but using the 3G mobile broaband i get like 4 hours something i think using the same settings.
Are some of you sure that you haven't got this the wrong way around?

Well, my BlackBerry uses less on the Edge/GSM/GPRS module than WI-Fi - I think it'll depend on the technology really.

I'm getting the same as rachuk with my WWAN/WLAN usage - I get approx 25% less battery life if I have a long browsing session over WWAN compared to WiFi. It seems the HSDPA modem is more 'thirsty' than the Intel WiFi adapter...
Still, I get about 3.5-4 hours even on WWAN, so I'm happy enough with it.

My old smartphone (a Nokia N80) used far less battery on Edge/GSM/GPRS than it did on WiFi, so I agree with DetlevCM, too. :)

3.5 to maybe a little over 4hrs with for normal usage (surfing web, bluetooth on/off doesn't matter + some music playing for half the time)
6 hr or a bit higher with enxtended battery (doing similar task)

These are my observation from 80% charged (battery care enabled) to 10% left.. I was a bit disappointed at first because people up here reported a relatively high number, however, when i posted and ask where those number comes from, one said it was his but with some off time (the laptop is on but not being used). If i do the same thing, I can get a solid 9hrs with standard battery and 17 hrs on extended battery
