    Hi all,

Ok, I decided to purchase a Sony Vaio Z because I can't wait for the fall for the Montevina ultraportables. I know there are posts divided everywhere about this issue but I wanted to make a thread especially for this, so we have all opinons together to compare: What would you choose SSD or blu-ray drive for your Z and why?

I am tempted by both... :) The 2x64 GB RAID is extremely expensive (over 1500$) but is very usefull, and the BD is a nice feauture but I don't know if I really need it. BTW, I will watch movies to the BRAVIA via HDMI.

    Any opinion appreciated.

I vote for the Blu-ray drive if I had to purchase a Z. This SSD that Sony choosen is way too expensive even if they say that is 2x faster than a SSD. Take it with a blu-ray and upgrade the HDD later on with a cheaper SSD. Anyway a 200 GB 7200 rpm I believe is going to be quite as fast.

I'd personally go for the SSD, but that's just because I download my movies and because I won't be burning any Blu-rays anyway. However, like jack already mentioned, I also heard from others that replacing your HDD with a (cheaper) SSD is fairly easy, so if you really want both, that actually is possible.

Id vote Blueray as hard drives can always be upgraded later and usually for less. And SSDs are currently not as mainstream as Blueray is becomming.

None. Bluray is not interesting to me because if I watch movies I've downloaded them.

SSD is not interesting because Sony overcharges.

If I buy Z, I'll take a cheap HHD and replace it with OCZ Core SSD.

Since you have an hdtv, get blu-ray. Then get an SSD when prices are cheaper.

I am leading toward this option. Is a cheaper choice and the 200GB 7200 rpm it will not be slow in any kind. I hope doesn't overheat the Z or make too much noise.

I'd say....get neither. The SSD prices will eventually come down and you can upgrade that later for a lot less.

Regarding the Blu-Ray drive, don't get that either because it's a $500 premium. For that amount you could get a PS3 (best Blu-Ray player) and still have money left over. The only reason to get it on the the laptop is if you're really thinking about watching Blu-Ray while on the laptop...if not, just get a dedicated player.

I think it is possible if you do it really clean and keep the original harddrive at hand. So if anything goes wrong you can put the old harddrive back. also the damage to the screws should be minimal.

Officially you void warranty by opening it I believe. But I have not heard of any reports of Sony not repairing because of this.

Think of it this way. The first DVD burner portable by Sony was nothing more than 300. Wait till there is a BD portable burner available, you will be saving over 200 for sure (+ faster compare to whatever is available now). SSD is way too over price now also. Buy a normal Z with decent Hardrive and DVD RW for now, upgrade later.

My .02: I can't seem to understand how ppl spend money. We all know BD and SSD are overpriced. Ppl can't afford to get those bc 1. there will be a hole in your pocket + 2. it's stupid BUT it's okay to pay for one.

Well some people got the money to just buy a Blu-Ray drive or an SSD...
Sometimes time is worth more than money, so you pay 100$ more to have something you need now rather than in 4 months... e.g if your jobdemands you to be able to read/write HD-Content from/to Blu-Ray discs...

Can anyone confirm that the blu ray burner on FW is different from the one on Z? I guess they are different since the burner on FW is 300 dollars and the burner on Z is 500 dollars. The blu-ray burner on Z might be lighter and slimmer.

Interesting talk, Im stuck on the Blu ray option, I have a PS3 at home, but am buying this for school, and am wondering if ill ever use the Blu ray during off class, but I'll prob just surf the net and play some games while waiting instead.
I was really thinking about it , if i chose to go Public transit cuz of gas prices, but I prob wouldnt get a seat most of the time!!

I too have a PS3, but it is a Region B player. I plan on using the Z Blu-ray drive for Region A purposes. We dont even have Prision Break S1 on BD, yet the Region A areas will be getting S3 soon.
