Sorry if that has been asked already, but I'm very curious - how is Z's screen compared to SR's?

in SR's forum it is told, that SR has "ECO" screen, which is still quite nice. Z uses some "Dura-View" screen. Is there any difference in Angles/Contrast/Saturation?

For ecample - in other model's threads people say, that HiColor screens are much better, than ECO ones.
    a. Does that mean, that SR is worse, than any HiColor?
    b. Does Z has hi-color screen?

I'm looking for a best 12-13.3 screen quality, the money can buy. But only if there is a noticeable difference with a jump of a price.

The Z's Duraview screen is supposedly the best yet (but I'm only going on what I've read). :)

The marketing blurb goes on about "100% colour saturation", which means nothing, but I suspect they mean "100% NTSC gamut" or similar. Basically, the display has a wider-than-usual range of colours it can display. Also, the Z's screen has LED backlight so it's brighter than normal screens for less battery drain. (Maybe not as bright as HiColor though, I think.)

From what I can tell from reviews and specs, the Z's screen fits your requirement of "the best 12-13.3 screen quality that money can buy". :D

I had a look at a prototype Z earlier today and compared it directly to the SR's screen and there is just no comparison. The Z blows away the SR's screen. Though both have LED backlighting, the Z's screen is significantly brighter which leads to better contrast. Colour reproduction is also far superior and I won't be surprised if Sony's claim of 100% NTSC colour gamut is not unfounded.

What you get with the Z is probably one of the finest if not THE finest notebook screens regardless of size. If you have the budget, definetely go for the Z hands down.

I doubt any laptop display except monster 15'' IPS-screens can get any close to 100% of NTSC, but I still believe if some TN matrix is better than others - it is installed in VAIO :)

SR is also LED backlit and at our cocal website - both SR and Z have "X-Brite" displays. While DuraView technology looks to be ralated to some protective coating of Z's screens (According to Z's thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3659981&postcount=69) - and contrast gets lost same way at different angles :(

Z's did not arrive here, so I can't compare myself yet - and have some time to bother people here, LOL.

My dream is 13'3 LED backlit 300nit IPS screen  That's what I would pay 3-4K for

What makes me look at Z - is price - it's screen has to be better :)

Well I haven't seen one either, but the anecdotal reports all point towards it being a very nice display. ;)

Sounds promising :) At least now I won't get SR before getting hands on Z and direct comparison in the store.

Also it looks, like Z does not drain battery same as SR... But I did not read full Z's forum yet

I think that there is a difference also between American and Europian version of the Vaio SR.

    On sonystyle.com, for the model SR190, I read "XBRITE-ECO™" screen;

    On sonystyle.it, for the model SR19XN, I read X-Black screen;

    What's better? What're the differences between XBRITE-ECO and X-Black ?

No difference. In Europe XBRITE screens are called X-Black.

I believe the european SR's all come with ECO LEDs too.

From reading I'm expecting the Z too be brighter and less reflective than the SR.

upon casual inspection a couple nites ago, i wouldn't say there's a hugedifference... but i obviously didn't see the screens outside and i didn't mess with brightness settings.

From videos I've seen, the Z has very wide viewing angles. The SR is middle of the road.

I just wish the Z had a completely matte screen. =(

I have to double check but seems fairly matte  I haven't noticed an ounce of reflections on it, at least with the brightness around 60%+ .. The screen is really really nice. I'm impressed :D

I finally got a chance to directly compare the Z and SR today. I must say that the display on the Z is very nice straight out of the box. Lots of contrast and bright vivid colors. The non-glare is pretty cool as well. The display on the poor SR sitting next to the Z looked downright bland and washed out. As someone who owns an SR I know that the display is capable of much more. To me the Z display is a tad bit brighter than the SR, but where it really excels is in the vivid colors and contrast. The Z display was a bit warmer and exhibited a slightly reddish tinge. The SR is a bit more neutral with whites displaying a bit cooler than the Z. Since about five minutes after receiving my SR I have had the color saturation turned up a bit (looking in the ATI Catalyst Control Center under Avivo color) to make the display pop a little. To me it looks like Sony applied filters to the Z display to create the same effect without needing software. So while the Z display looks fantastic out of the box the SR display can be made to look similar. If you have integrated video you're kinda out of luck. You might try color calibration and messing with the color levels, but the ATI software works much better. I've inserted a couple pics of my display to show the difference between stock and modified.

I'm just basing it off of the videos I've seen online. Here's one from Gizmodo:

    http://gizmodo.com/5025164/hands-on-sony-vaio-z+series-worlds-smallest-lightest-blu+ray-laptops

In the video towards the bottom of the page, you can see that the screen is semi-reflective. Of course not nearly as shiny as the SR.

I found the screen of the Z incredibly better than the SR, both in color quality, brightness, and clarity. It was just incredibly (personally)

I spent a bit of time yesterday observing that, and it's a bit reflective but nowhere near the glossiness of most consumer laptops out right now. So yeah, it's semi reflective :)

Well, even though the SR is pretty glossy, even when using the thing outside, I can still see the screen perfectly. I think it's the LED back lighting, but I have used it to play music whilst walking around and annoying people at college. I could still see the colors and even the text perfectly. (With like 65% brightness too. It would've been pretty good with 100%.)

But the Z is supposed to have 100% color saturation, so of course the SR is no match. xD

Wow, Duffy, that is a big noticeable difference. I think color saturation was one of the first things I played around with. Curious though, what do you have your settings set to for that kind of color? (contrast, saturation, brightness, tint?)

The only thing I have adjusted is the Color Saturation. Look under the Catalyst Control Center > Notebook Panel Properties > Avivo Color. I have mine set to 150. In that picture I have the backlight set to 100%, but I usually have mine set around 5/8.

Ahhh, I see. That is a great difference though from the original stock setting.

Wow... @_@ XD Thanks for telling me.

I see... Yeah, mine is usually set to about 6/8 or so when on battery, 100% plugged in, which isn't all that often. xD

No problem. 5/8 is usually enough for me unless I'm in a bright room. My work computer is a T60 so it's pretty dim at full brightness. 100% brightness on my SR would prolly burn my retinas. :D

Yeah, I would think so, but it's not too bad because I usually end up using my Glasses when using the laptop. My glasses have some kind of anti-reflective coating that helps reduce glare to my eyes and it dims how I see everything too. xD

Though, on 100% I can't usually stare at it too long. xD

Yeah, I saw your web cam photo. The reflection on your glasses reminds me of what glare looks like on the Z display. Maybe they have the same coating. :D Cool glasses BTW.

Heh, so you think it was me? It was... I just was curious to see if anyone would assume that or not. xD

Thanks... I got them a long while ago. I need to replace the lenses, they are scratched up. The frames are still great though, they were... designer. >.>

Yeah, I guess I never thought that the glossyness was similar to that of the Z... But my glasses do wonders to help me see better.
