Quick question:
What's the max external resolution that the Z is capable of? Would love to be able to use it with a 30" Dell LCD....
Thanks,

I think the 30" would make it lag. maybe not if you have the 9300 GS. most computer can do anything, but doing it well is different. A lot of the 30" screens require dual DVI which no Sony laptop has, so I think it wouldn't work well. A normal WUXGA monitor should be fine though, which is still a lot of space

Thanks. But what is the actual max external resolution? 1920 X 1200? Higher?
Thanks,

There's another thread with this same question:
<edit>I tried to link to the other thread, it said: You are only allowed to post URLs to other sites after you have made 15 posts or more.</edit>
Unfortunately, there's no answer there either.
The last post I made was to tell about the conversation I had with Sony tech support, where the guy said it would work with dual-link DVI, that he had in fact seen it personally work with a 30" Apple LCD. I don't know if the Apple 30" has a scaler, if so, it may have worked at a non-native resolution.
I'd really like to know if this would work. If the dock and laptop were in stock at sony I think I'd order it to try it out, but I am hesitant to pay money for backordered stuff with no idea when it'll get here, and when it does, if it'll really work. -
the resolution is only limited by the monitor and the video card. So you first have to check what is the max res the videocard can handle, then buy a monitor. Just go to nvidia website.

Hmm anyone want to pass me a DVI converter?
I have the dell 30" I have the Z and I have the HDMI cable... but I still cant test for you. Sorry. -
34" Sony. Everything work fine. 1600x900 is the maximum for my external on my Z590.

The HDMI and DisplayPort standards have higher clock rates, and can (in some implementations, NOT all) do 2560x1600. If you have a DisplayPort or HDMI that supports that resolution, you can't just use a el cheapo $30 adapter to convert it to dual-link DVI, you'd need a adapter with electronics in it that decodes the high-rate single-link DisplayPort/HDMI, and creates dual-link DVI. So most HDMI->DVI adapters will NOT support 2560x1600. The only one I've ever heard of that would work is Apple's mini-DisplayPort to DualLinkDVI adapter, which is $100, and will only work with Apple's laptops that have a mini DisplayPort connector.
The other thread I alluded to in my first post talks about this in more detail, as does the wikipedia article on DVI, as well as a million other webpages I can't link to because this site won't let me post links until I've got 15 posts.
Z- maximum external resolution?
