    Hi,

I just got Z11, but only comes with 100gig. I tried looking for a 250gig SSD at the online sony store, but couldn't find it. Anybody knows link (and cost) for this part. My 15 day return is almost up and I am evaulating if I should return (futureshop) this lappy and order one on online with 250gig ssd.

    thanks

    Return/exchange it.

The SSDs in the Z11 are custom SSDs in a custom configuration with custom connections...about as proprietary as they could be. This is how they manage to squeeze a quad SSD RAID into a 13" notebook. In any event, they are NOT meant to be user maintainable and you'd probably void your warranty - assuming you could even find the parts anywhere.

    +1

yeah return and reorder. It would cost WAAAYYYYY too much ordering that drive from Sony.

Option 2 would be to remove the optical drive if you don't really use it and install any 2.5" SSD you'd like. That's the approach i finally went down, works well.

Where did you get the SSD for the optical drive? I was looking at some of the post and it seems tricky with all the compatibility issue (patch)....Im not really a technical guy.

Option 2 is not viable. It causes issues with CPU power management.

Check the Z11 FAQ for details.

I think option 2 is only viable if you have dual SSD's and not quad. the power bug kicks in when you have 5 drives. someone correct me if i'm wrong.

    Thanks for the info!

From what I read, since my Z is a 128 (1 drive) North American, I can put another drive via DVD slot. If so, where can I get this drive and does it require me to install a patch?

you can use any 2.5" SSD and one of these PROVANTAGE: Lenovo 43N3412 ThinkPad SATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter II

unlike some posters here, I did not have to mod the ultrabay at all other than cut off a little plastic block, piece of cake. I didn't even use anything to secure the bay, pressure from the assembled laptop seems to hold it place. Hasn't moved at all, and i carry it with me to work 5 days a week.

    Wow, that's dangerous.

You need to secure it with something. The problem isn't with it falling out, but it smashing into the mainboard when the inevitable drop happens. It will also keep friction from damaging the cables.
