Anyone one have an alternative source to SuperBiiz for the Samsung DRAM? They are out of stock and the closest price I've found so far is $50+ higher.

Ebay :p IF you're looking for exact chip installed in the VPCZ11, then yes it is sold out, but if you want the one that ggold used (and verified it works) it's still in stock on superbiiz

And other than it being a different part number, it seems to be reported that it operates exactly the same. Look at my post above from CPU-Z

Ahh... okay, I hadn't grokked this was a different part # (just saw the part# was the same as mine on the first screen shot and the numbers were equal and didnt get it was a different chip #). Glad its out of stock as the substitute is half the cost. No brainer, order goes in today. Thanks all!

I just read the whole thread. Correct me if I am wrong, does the RAM that comes with the Z have a clock speed of 1333mhz but clocked down to 1066mhz? And all VPC-Z1's use the Samsung 1333mhz RAM regardless of the size?

My CTO Z12 has one 2GB stick and I want to get a 4GB stick to make a total of 6. I want one that's exactly the same as mine but with 4GB. Using cpu z the part number of my 2gb memory is M471B5673FH0-CF8.

No, not all Z come with 1333mhz clock speed.
my Z1390 CTO come with 1066mhz clock speed
and No not all come with samsung Ram
mine are Micon (the builder of crucial ram)

No. Whether you can use RAM at 1333 MHz or 1066 MHz depends on the CPU you bought. Only the faster CPUs can use DDR3 at 1333 speed.
So all (new) Zs with the i7 will have DDR3 1333. For the slower i5s, it doesn't matter, so Sony puts in whatever is cheapest or they have the most of -- with the chips Sony uses, if it's a 1333 SODIMM, it will run at 1066 at the same latency as a "native" 1066 SODIMM, 7-7-7-20.

With the CPU being soldered on the motherboard, this doesn't matter much to the end-user, except if he buys a new laptop that can use DDR3 1333, and wants to bring memory over from the old one, or if he switches out the RAM and wants to sell the old SODIMMs.

For my particular use (concurrent compiling), latency is most important, so I went with 5-5-5-15 clocked DDR3-1066, which has about the same overall throughput as typical 9-9-9-23 DDR3-1333, but lower latency (5/1066 < 9/1333) which favours small accesses. For things like video work, 1333 would have been faster.

I'm pretty sure the Z itself can only use 1066mhz RAM even though the processor can handle 1333mhz ram. As for the brand of the RAM, the VPCZ11's and early VPCZ12's used Samsung modules. As for the current models, they've changed it. Also, with the CTO VPCZ11's the 4gb config was 1x4gb module vs the 2x2gb configuration they use with the current CTO's and every preconfigured model

Corsair 8GB RAM are sucessfully installed and work fine at 7-7-7-20, ram usage drop to 25%.

Got the ram this evening, installed no problem. Thanks all! As a return favor, I mention that I noticed after installing the extra ram, my free disk space dropped by 8GB! Traced it to additional hibernate space and an increase in the swap file size. Over-committing that much memory would render the box useless anyway. I decided to leave hibernate enabled, though I'm debating about that, but I regained 6GB by knocking down paging to a max of 2GB. Probably will drop it to 1/2G or less. So if you up your ram and haven't messed with the paging, do so as its a complete waste of your SSD space!

Thanks for the tip, can you explain this in a little more, as I would like to do it.
    I did upgrade from 1x 4GB to 2 x 4GB.

Sure. You can find instructions on how to reset the size of your paging file here. Look for the section entitled, "Disable the Page File". If you follow the instructions there you can set the amount of swap you'll allow the system to do. Essentially whats going on here is if you run out of physical memory the OS will swap out some idle pages of memory to disk and free it up for use by another program. You're not likely to try to run 16GB of programs in 8GB of memory as things will get far too slow long before you get anywhere near needing that much swap space. I set mine to 1 Gig, but I think (as per the article) that even that is over kill, but I'm being conservative.

Dunno if its true in all instances, but my Z1190 came from the factory with 1333. As mentioned earlier in this thread you can run CPU-Z to verify your ram speed.

    Okay... it's 533 x 2 (dual channel) = 1066 mhz.

With RAM... it's backwards compatible with speed... so 1333 mhz RAM WILL run with a processor that only supports 1066 mhz. Except that it'll have faster timings. In many cases, the 1333 mhz ram is 9-9-9-24 becomes 7-7-7-20...

    it's simple math... 1066/1333=T/9 -> T=7

Hey can anyone tell me if upgrading to this ram on a vaio z1190 would be a waste of money?? any difference between this and the run of the mill ram thats currently available and would work on the vaio z?

    Kingston HyperX 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 XMP SODIMMs (KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX)
