    My Z11VN with Vista Business ran into this problem almost from the beginning.

    When trying to sleep or hibernate, it would either hang indefinatelly with a black screen and the green power light on, or after shutting down abnormally it would reboot from the black, 'start windows normally' option screen.

    Initially i had it set up to sleep when pressing the power button and hibernate when closing the lid, but then i tried it with all those settings to 'never'. No luck. It still hangs even when i try to sleep or hibernate with the Start button commands.

    I've read a lot about this problemg but have found no workiable remedy. Any ideas?

    Do you close the lid as you are hibernating? i.e. before the HDD activity / power light has gone out?

    No, i dont close the lid. I wait to see what happens, and it hangs with the power light on.
    I have chosen to do 'Nothing' when i close the lid, but still it hangs.
    Maybe i should try to remove, then reinstall the VAIO Power Management, i read somewhere to try this out.

    Perhaps worth researching the issue further - or maybe even talking to Sony (I know, most of you will laugh but miracles can happen :p) before you go breaking something.

    I have had this happen on a relatively isolated number of occasions on not just the Z, but the TT and the TZ/SZ before it - where the laptop stays on, but seems to be doing nothing. The number of occurrences (and I am a very frequent sleeper / hibernator with the power button assigned hibernate and lid close sleep on all my notebooks) of it hasn't been enough to make me worry about it.

    Exact same problem with my Vaio FW11M (Vista Home). Sony support advises:
    1. Complete restoration to exclude software issues;
    2. Test restored configuration without installing new software;
    3. Contact them for collection of laptop if issue persists (meaning hardware issue).
    I have not followed their advice yet, for lack of time and because I doubt it will solve issue.

    I have the same problem with my SZ3VP/X when I close the lid. The screen turns into black but the LED won't turn off, I need to hold the power button to turn it off. Sometimes the fan doesn't stop either, and the power button doesn't work, I need to remove the battery + Power jack.

    I did call SONY, they said i needed to do a system restore, or send it to them ....... They also said to try disabling all running services, see if it's happening, then if not to turn on one at a time to hopefuly locate one that might be causing problem. i counted over one hundred services, so i dont think i'll try it ... yet.

    Sleep and Hibernate working again !!!! I followed the advise to uninstall then reinstall the VAIO Power Management, and now it’s ok!!! I’ve tried it 15-20 times and only once did it hang, when reinserting the Memory stick ! Both Sleep and Hibernate, without hanging! I am elated !!!
    Once I am confident it works, I will re-activate the lid and power button commands, ( I want it to sleep with the power button and hibernate when closing the lid). Also the Password on Reboot, just in case the fingertip software is at fault.
    If all goes well, I will have my VAIO back to normal! I find Sleep and Hibernate absolutely necessary for a laptop and I wonder why SONY came up with their own thoroughly confusing, non-user friendly software, when it apparently has compatability issues with the simple and effective Windows one. If it ever gives me trouble, I will simply remove it for good as I should have done with all my VAIO’s so far.
