My Z was suppose to ship on the 29th but it shipped on the 24th instead. :) I was also surprised to see it actually ships from Japan and not the US. I bought it from sonystyle.ca

My CTO also shipped from Japan on the 24th and just arrived this morning in Anchorage. So the 29th is now the projected arrival date.

all Z12 offers on ebay from computerupgradeking just got more expensive by $250! same price stays on sonystyle.com.

it's 2270+tax on selected config (256SSD + carbon) there, just a day ago was just 2300 on ebay and it's now 2550!

anyone might know the reason? is it price up for weekend :)

please suggest where I can buy one for reasonable price (maybe using some offers or discounts). Thanks!

Looks like I may be a first time Vaio buyer with the Z12.

I'm a medium power user, definitely like a speedy computer, but cost is an issue, as is excessive heat from the system.

    Should I go for
    -i5 or i7 (+$150)
-Black, Carbon (+$50), or Metal Shield (+$100)
    -4GB or 6GB (+$150)

Are people enjoying their full-HD screens or is it too hard to read?

-i5. If cost is an issue and you are a medium power user, I think that's a no-brainer. The i5 is a very fast processor and you won't notice the difference between it and the i7 for anything except the most CPU-intensive applications.

-Black, again, if you are on a budget. Definitely not the metal shield. These colors don't really add anything to durability or anything. They are completely aesthetic.

-This would be the only one where I'd splurge and go for 6GB, but very likely you won't need it. 4GB will be fine for most users.

    - i5-540M
    - If you need aesthetics then Carbon else Black is fine too
    - 4GB will be plenty

thanks for advice, actually I found good configurations there, although not with 1080p screen. assume these new models has not yet arrived to these shops.

meanwhile, J&R has very good offer of z11 with 384GB SSD for $2400. I found in parallel threads some guys would love to get more SSD for reasonable money.
I would prefer better screen and think 256GB should be enough for me (128 is too small anyway)

Thanks guys! i5, 4GB it is.
128GB is too small though so I guess I'll splurge on 256GB. I wish there was a HD option.

Are there any good comparison photos of the carbon fiber and black anywhere. Is it $50 nicer?

Any review of the Full-HD screen yet? Will the text be too small on it?

I'm sure there are better comparison pics somewhere.

I'm sure it will probably be too small if you use 100% DPI scaling only.

It won't be if you use something higher than 100%.

Here I got a problem fellas...

As the way it was, the accessories were shipped before the laptop as laptop needs to be customized and shipped from Japan. Yesterday, FedEx online tracking system said that my package from Sony was delievered... I'm not at home for these two weeks tho. So I had my friend go over to my apartment and check for package. He said there was only a slip on the door, saying "left on deck", what the hell does left on deck mean? Besides, the online tracking from FedEx, however, says "the item was left in the front door".

Obviously, there was nothing in front of the door, if my friend hasn't stolen the package from me...

Uhmmm.. do you live in an apartment complex? If yes, FedEx might have left the package at your apartment complex office.

I had a package lost once which was delivered by FedEx. They left it at the door I guess? or I don't know, but I never got it. It was my desktop components, but thank God Amazon was so nice to send new parts ASAP free of charge.

I hope you do get the package :)

Just ordered my Z12 (over the phone) on Tuesday June 22nd. Estimated ship date is 6/30/2010

Struggled with Core i5 or i7. Blu-ray or regular, and 128 or 256 SSD. I wanted Blu-ray REAL bad but not worth $500. Why can't they do a blu-ray combo drive for the Z?

In the end I decided i7 since I was too insecure to pass it up. Also, got premium carbon fiber just because this is a hot laptop and I wanted a pretty lid.

A day after I order, Metal Shield come out as an option. I e=mail customer care and they say can't change in process orders to protect me from fraud. Lame.

    Here's my config:
    -Core i7
    -4GB Ram
    -256GB SSD
    -CD/DVD Burner
-1920x1080 Full HD (this option tickled my noodle)
    -Large Battery
    -Premium carbon fiber
    - Windows 7 Professional
    -no mobile broadband

$2569.99 before taxes and discount! I can't wait for this bad boy! Yum!

sorry for asking it again - does anybody know a place (e-shop) to buy Z12 with 1080p (1920x1080) screen resolution to avoid paying sales tax?

sony-style "clear" price is good, but $200 tax make it a bit higher. computerupgradeking prices on ebay just got $250 higher for some reason. normal shops I checked (tigerdirect, j&r, sears, newegg) do not offer models with 1080p resolution.

regarding possible discount from sony-style - I got it can be 15% off from laptop price if warranty plan for 2 years is ordered. is it one that costs 179$ or 299$ (with accident damage recover)?
I don't need a plan as I'll use laptop outside of US, just looking for a good price :)

I don't think any online retailer is offering the 1080p screen option (yet?). If you need 1080p, sonystyle is the only option for now.

You only need the 2 year service plan ($179) to get the 15% discount and you can also return the warranty later on ;-)

I bought mine at portableone.com. No sales tax, and they have a few system with the 1920x1080 screen.

    Portableone.com.....no tax, fullHd models.
the one I bought was noticeably cheaper than sonystyle

Indeed portableone has some models with 1920x1080. Unfortunately those are hi-end ones, with 512 SSD and costing $3.7k and $4.1k. anyway, thanks for suggestion!

Just ask them, how much discount can I get? etc. And most probably the sony rep will say they can give you maximum 10%. Tell them, some people are getting 15% off, and hopefully you will get it too ;)

Wow, I'm glad I bit the bullet and got the Z instead of the HP Envy 14. It came in way more expensive than originally promoted. The difference with the Z is probably only $200-300. With the Z you get a much lighter computer.

plus it won't melt on your lap or something similar. HP makes crummy laptops. They always die within a year of use. We've had 2 with the same results.. just as i write this my wife's HP laptop is in "Repair boot mode" for the umpteenth time this week. It keeps overheating.

Has anyone been able to get the trade-up discount with this laptop purchase?

    sony.tradeups.com

Sony Trade Up and Go Promo 4 gives you $300 for an eligible trade in towards an eligible computer purchase

the VPC-Z11SGX/S is there, but no VPC-Z12 models are listed; anyone know if this works for CTO computers?

    Thanks

p.s. someone said something about a review indicating a 50db fan. Is the fan really that loud?

Yeah, and I'm kinda excited about it because it looks to be a version with US keyboard layout, not the dreaded short-left-shift multilingual one.

On the other hand, for only CAD$134 more, one can get a Z1290X CTO with i5 540M, Carbon Fiber, and 1080p screen. =/

But at least it's a chance to go and see it in person. :D

Yeah, but the model Future Shop carries is not a CTO, it's VPCZ122GX/B. In the past, for Z11 generation, they had a Canadian VPCZ11-something model with a Multiling keyboard layout.

Hey all! So I was about to buy a HP Envy computer when I heard about the Sony Vaio Z.

Could someone please give me a summary of how the computer runs, pro's and cons etc.

Also, are there any coupons available (BCB etc.) I am in no rush to get a laptop.. just need it by september 1st.

I would like a laptop that will last me a long time, so I want to know how customer support is too

If you can deal with a constant buzzing noise and a loose battery then the Z is the best laptop out there but it does come with a heft price tag.

Saw the R705 at the local best buy. Even my $200 msi netbook had better keyboard than this Toshiba. All the exterior parts felt cheaper than my netbook. Sony Z it is for me. Even at twice the price of the R705, the Z is a much better value. Custom ordered one with the 1080p screen with 15% discount. Hopefully they let me return the warranty and 2 accessories that they forced me into.
