    Hey guys,

can anyone confirm that VPC-Z13's were changed CPU-wise and do have socketed PGA988 CPUs now? AFAIK, VPC-Z had soldered BGA1288 CPUs - Service Manual says :
If we only had Z13 service manual or someone who opened his Z13 and had a look on the bottom side of the mobo... Please drop a line here.

PS: Upcoming Sandy Bridge Laptops will have socketed cpus since Intel provides them only in PGA packages which is good news regarding CPU upgradeability (as long as notebook manufacturers do not solder them in a pin-through-hole process).

What gives you the impression they were changed?

As far as the future is concerned...based on designs I've seen I seriously doubt that Intel will drop BGA CPU's, but I suppose anything is possible :)

My local notebook store (I don't think they are that competent) claims to successfully equip a Z with an extreme edition quad core i7 with an (ironic)insignificant(/ironic) TDP boost of just 20 watts.

For a 500 bucks of cash you get your Z boosted and your warranty voided. Wanted to know whether this is a hoax or a serious offer I would be considering if I need another new 3000$ hot air gun.

I guess for the rest of the (Z13) community this would be more interesting when purchasing a lower end Z and retrofitting an i7-640 or so later when Sandy Bridge has brought down Arrandale price tags.

If you believe that, you'll believe anything.

Also I have a bridge to sell you, located in Brooklyn, NY, slightly used.

I can't confirm but I seriously doubt the Z13 switched to socketed CPU. Regardless, the z couldnt handle anywhere near 20 more watts of dissipation.

It must has a dual exhaust. Probably some one would try to do some modding and trying to fit a modified motherboard inside :D.

Even if it is socketed, the mother board chip set would have to be compatible with the I7. I doubt the current Z13 chipset is compatible with the I& processor.

    It wouldn't be compatible...the pre-s/b i7's didn't even have graphics on them.

HM57 chipset seems to be compatible with i7-900/800 series judging what intels chipset compatibility list says. Might be problematic though to break the hybrid system.

^Graphics are definitely soldered. Not sure if Z13 changed to socketed CPU, but I highly doubt that as well.
