I have a Z13 that I screwed up (as seen in a thread on here ). Just want your opinions on whether it's worth selling as a whole or parting out?

2 connectors on the MoBo are screwed up
Screen has the typical purple blotch in the center
Touch pad doesn't work (99% sure it's the ribbon on MoBo)

EDIT: Here for parts for sale

depending on where you sell and how - you might have bigger success selling the good parts and get more money out of them than just sell as whole and not working.

I usually part out when something is broken. I sould two UX's that way a few years ago and got back more than I bought them for.

Do you have WWAN? I'll buy the WWAN antennas and the GOBI card. I'd also buy that HDD caddy.

No WWAN and am keeping the HDD caddy.

Hmm...guess I will be looking into parting it out.

I've never sold a broken computer before, so I wasn't sure what the demand was for.

For example, I just paid Sony $87 for a tiny part that includes a USB port and the headphone jacks. If you were to list the parts sale here and on the NBR Marketplace, and just leave it there until all the 'bones" are picked, you may well get more than the value of it working!

Alternatively, you could just give it a dignified burial.

Probably more environmentally proper to cremate it first.

If you're looking to sell parts; I would like to call dibs on the keyboard/aluminum chassis if there's not too much damage to it :]

What lid have you got? I wouldn't mind picking up a carbon fiber lid cuz the ones from Sony are mad expensive.

Look at this! A Vaio Z broken and we have cyborg's ready to rebuild themselves from the unfortunate fate of our fellow sistrin. These parts are like gold! I see terminator 2 movements here!!

But when our macs are broken, we go to the genius bar, like little girls calling out to daddy.

Yes, and by all means, you should check all the prices and give people value, but don't let them "steal" parts. You probably have not used this very much and it's parts are probably as good as new.

    What is a mac?

kinda odd, but i will like to have all your screws at the bottom of your laptop (lost a couple of mine), let me know thanks

i dont need anything else, unless you have a good condition 1080p screen and nobody else takes the keyboard itself (not the chassis) and a silver palmrest would be nice too

I prefer to think of it like this: the guy isn't lacking options for getting some (or all) of his money back even though his computer is broken. Sony is rubbish at making spares available for individual users at non insane prices. If this guy wants, he can sell his spares individually for merely "mad" prices. But not "insane". Oh no.

Wow...been busy and haven't had a chance to get back here...

Seeing as there is interest, I have the computer stripped down and will just list everything on ebay. Not sure what stuff is worth, so I'll let the bidders decide. Check back for links.

The better comparison is to the used market value, probably more like $1,500. Don't undersell yourself. These parts are extremely expensive from Sony. If you're not in a hurry to sell them and recover minor cash, i would stop auctions if prices are too low. Given time, I think you will get nearly $1,000. I can't really tell if your 1080p screen is damaged or has a common minor issue, but the screen is worth $300-$500 if not damaged and the carbon fibre lid alone is worth $300!

@awenthol: care to share with us how you did on your parts bazar? Is this the most lucrative way to sell a Z1, with or without any broken parts?

i have been watching closely on all of his auctions, and bid on many of them but here is the gist of the results:

some of the items that didnt have immediate interests (no bids) were taken offline one day before the end (i noticed since i wanted to get one of the daughterboards at the last minute but didnt see it listed anymore)

screen was 410 bucks, ssd was 200 bucks, bad mobo no idea, keyboard (with bad cable i think) was 150, back cover with screws was 18.5, dvd was 7.50, other items i wasnt sure

so i think total was abit short of 1000 bucks

Nice job monitoring ^ +1. Surprised he got $410 for the screen since he said it had issues. By "back cover" I assume you mean bottom. Wonder if he sold the lid. If it was in decent shape, that's an easy $200 more (I think he sold that through NBR). Sounds like parting it out was a good idea.

Yes, screen and "lid" I guess you would call it, went as one to namaiki...who snatched up most everything else :D Only thing I'm disappointed in was the motherboard...thought I would get a little something for it. After shipping I ended up with just a couple bucks.

Also wouldn't say parting it out was worth it...after eBay and PayPal took their cuts, and shipping, I didn't end up with more than a few hundred....live and learn.

chroma_cg...DVD drive should have been there by now.

do you still have the USB, WiFi switch and audio daughterboard for sale? I'd be interested in that, as my replacement Z didn't come with the noise-canceling feature.
