Just got my Z13 back from the repair shop but they had no idea what to do.

    Basically this is what's happening:

After 30 seconds of power on the fan spins to maximum speed for no reason at all, regardless of being in the bios, in the OS, or even when just selecting OS from the dual-boot menu.

I am dual-booting 7 and XP, it happens on BOTH OS's, in power management all settings are set to quiet and lowest power-levels, switched to integrated GPU and CPU usage is at 1%, and cpu temps are 30 ~ 40 degrees celsius so the fan has no reason to run crazy, so it's NONE of those things
I tried using some fan control software but as some of you probably know Sony is really picky about what software they let affect the hardware (can't even update my nvidia driver)
There's no options in bios that has anything to do with cpu or fan control

I tried to get help from Sony and as previously mentioned I even had it sent to be repaired, is there any fix for this?

I remember reading from someone who removed their fan/heatsink assembly that they had the same problem and it was they forgot to reattach some sensor or something...

edit: just read your first post, so you've had this problem before you sent it in for repair... maybe they put it together wrong in the first place. Trying to look for where I read that, cant find it ><

Let's exchange?! I wish mine was like that... it's always too hot. idles @ 55-60c and will easily throttle itself on max load.. reaching 92-100C .

    :(

Thankyou so much for the reply SurferJon so far you are my best lead! I opened the laptop and did a complete disassembly, the tab that connects to the motherboard IS on full contact with the gold piece.

Does it stay on at full force in sleep mode? This is just a shot in the dark, but there must be a thermostat in there and it is clearly mis-regulating. If possible, get it in a cold ambient temp (not below 0, just a cool room!) and get a cooling pad with good strong air flow. See if you can't "fool" it into thinking it is just too cold for the fan to kick in. If successful, run it very lightly (like idle with nothing running except a temperature probe and see if/how long it might keep the fan off. At worst, it's a bit more data; at best, it may just "jump start" the thermostat into acting normally. In any case, I would check into thermostat, which I fear may be a motherboard function.

Also, if you are still under wtty, I'd escalate the case after one bad result.

What are your temps? don't rule out a thermal coupling issue between the CPU and/or GPU and the heatsink.

    @ lovelaptops
I put it on top of my aircondition and powered it to max, CPU temps are now 7 degrees, GPU 12 degrees, fan is still running crazy

    @ beaups
    30 ~ 40 degrees celsius

    Have you checked GPU temp?

My VAIO SA does this from time to time just downloading files on the internet too, even though its set on stamina mode and maximum quietness.

My Z11 has fan problem too. I started about 1-2 months ago. I never opened my Z so I don't think the problem is from assembly.

The funny thing about my problem is the fan is spinning at high speed when the computer is cool and return to normal when the computer is warm. When I turn on my computer or resuming from sleep, The left side of my Z is making a very loud whirring noise so I think it is fan noise. After a while, the noise will go away.

Yeah, when you first boot and resume from hibernate, the fan spins up (because you're doing a ton of booty things), then when you get into windows it'll adjust to regular levels and leave you alone

It's not the temperatures guys they're really low, CPU 30 ~ 40 GPU 40, the fan NEVER goes down! EVER.

Also where can I order spare parts/screws? It seems after it was sent to repair it's actually missing a screw on the ram cover. Don't really care about costs.

^ do you have the vaio media gallery program installed? There's a program that installs with it that collects your media files (content analysis?). During this process the fan will run on max. I doubt this is the problem since you said the fan never goes down, but it's worth a shot. Uninstall vaio media gallery and the content analysis thing and if that isn't the problem you can always reinstall the media gallery.

I don't even think media gallery is available for Z13, besides this also happen when dual booting XP and when in bios, basically it just whirrs up to maximum after 30 seconds regardless of what's going on.
