    Hi all,
i am seriously considering buying a Sony Z but have a build question first:

Somewhere in a review (don't know where) u read the area below the neyboard where you are intended to rest your hands is made of steel/ aluminium for the Z13.

Others said, the material for the handrest is the same as the Z12 which is plastic (and feel kind of cheap imho).

    Can anybody enlighten me ;-)

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

    me once more...
i am really wondering now if there ain't metal palmrests out there...

Based on two reviews (one english, one german) i get 2 times the info it's made of aluminium?!?

Could the european versions e.g. be different from the US ?!? Or the other way round?

    here are the sources:

    1. http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5762&review=sony+vaio+z
"The keyboard and palmrest trim are a solid piece of metal with a Chiclet-style keyboard embedded in the surface."

    2. http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Sony-Vaio-VPC-Z12-Subnotebook.35454.0.html
"Das Gehäuse aus Kohlefaser (Carbonfaser) und Aluminium (Handballenauflage) ist für mobile Absichten optimiert und sehr verwindungssteif."

    hm... what do you think??

My guess is that the reviewers cut and pasted parts from earlier reviews of the VGN-Z, which did indeed have a single part tray with metal palmrests.

Or, the reviewers are standard reviewer quality, and can't tell painted plastic from metal :)

^Actually the VGN-Z didn't have metal at all...it was plastic painted to look like metal.

thanks again for the SWIFT feedback...
but i found something even funnier...

the german sonystyle page states it's metal as well...

    source: Z Serie : VAIO & weitere Computerprodukte : tab3 : Sony

    "Hochwertige Materialien

    in english:
    "High quality materials
Light but robust thanks to a hybrid-carbon housing, puts away the shocks and bump on the road with ease.

A hand rest of rolled aluminum for stability and durability at critical times, such as the edge where the notebook is held at the most one-handed carrying."

    hm.
    are german builds different ?!

Actually, I got a german Z and trust them, this and all other VPC-Z do indeed have painted plastic palmrests. End of story.

Perhaps you did, but it's still plastic :)...unless I got a special edition plastic version I think they were all plastic, no?

Lol, no, they're all metal...with transparent paint.

As for the palmrest in case of VPC-Z...many reviewers call all the "metal plate" under keyboard palmrest...not just the actual place for resting palms :) In other words - the top keyboard part:

VGN-Z - one piece of metal incl. palmrest
VPC-Z one piece of metal excluding plastic palmrests

You must have receieved a special edition plastic version, then.

    VPC-Z = plastic palmrest.
VGN-Z = metal palmrest, except for two unique Zs, one of which was transparent and made for a trade show, and the other belonging to beaups.

Hey now I already concieded this point. I could swear it was plastic with an imr treatment to simulate a metal look, but again I'll take your word for it and stand corrected.
