Hi guys, I was wondering, how much more powerful is the Z1 with its integrated graphics card vs. the Z2 when it is not connected to the PMD?

Also, excuse my ignorance, but what exactly does a graphics card do? Does it just make videos stream more fluidly? Does it make Photoshop run faster? Does it make rendering videos faster, or is that the processor's job? I'm a film student at USC, so this is an important question for me if I ever consider buying the Z2, as I will not be able to carry the PMD around with me. Many times, I will need to render my videos at school, so I want to know if the Z2 without the PMD will be slower than my Z1 with its integrated nVidia card (and if so, is there a proven percentage somewhere?).

Also, how much faster is the Z2 when connected to the PMD in comparison to a Z1 with comparable specs (like i7, 6 GB of RAM, etc.). Thanks guys!

Random question: Also, when are we going to see a Z3? 2013? I'm hoping they put everything back into one unit again, though I doubt it. :p

I think beaups hinted at a complete redesign at around summer.

up to 40% benchmark score increase. real performance increase only up to 20%.

Graphic card is only increase game performance, all intel hd graphic are able to handle videos up to 1080, photoshop will not be faster using gaming graphic like intel hd or geforce 330m or radeon 6650m, it will only get faster using quadro or firepro graphic card. if you are a video editor, obviously you will choose to use dedicated graphic card to render your edited video(video software editor dependent). Z2 is faster than Z1 if you are talking about integrated graphic and processing power.

PS: I hope you didn't mixed up integrated graphic(integrated to processor/motherboard) and dedicated graphic(amd/nvidia).

GT 330m inside Z1 will beat Z2 integrated Intel HD 3000, why? GT 330 is Middle class GPU, Intel HD 3000 is low class GPU. I can't show you the prove, as my z1 isn't with me now. The most visible prove is WEI index score.

Z2 with PMD vs GT 330m is up to 50% score increased. real performance increase is up to 16%.

PS: when i mention up to means it will never get there unless you tweak it.

I would like to see Z3 also :p

He definitely hinted at no such thing. Today, your guess is as good as mine.

Actually, he did, look up his posts. He said the new Z3 would be 2.5x better than the Z2! :D

Based on Sony's track record with the Z line, expect a Z23 next spring/summer that is a Z2 with IB.

Would like to know if their sticking to the external GPU or they are going back to and internal.

I don't mind the external, but having to wait for specialty/specific non upgradable drivers really blows.

Of course they're going to keep the eGPU design. With IB's redesigned graphics core, there will be even less reason to go back to the old clunky design. Current rumor has it that HD 4000 will be as much as 35% performance improvement over HD 3000 (expect less). However, as Mr. Young explained, "numbers add up to nothin'."

That would make it almost as fast as the 320m released three years ago at that point.

I hate Intel for their "Gotta squeeze every dollar out of each system" greed. Why on earth would they not outsource the GPU development to someone that knows what they are doing? Every blasted notebook sold this year and last have either dedicated graphics (Small Percent), or HD 3000's.

13" laptops with decent GPU's are non existent. The SA is about as good as it gets. However, Sony put a really poor screen on it.

Just wanted to vent out my frustrations.
