Just wanted to let you know that my CTO Z21 arrived this morning in France.

Yeah, now it's real, finally !!!

It's a black one with core I7, 3rd Gen 256 GB SSD, 8 Gb of RAM, Full HD screen and the DVD PMD.

    My first impressions are :

    - As I thought, the hinge looks and feels very special, and very fragile...

    - Apart from the hing, it feels tight and sturdy

    - very fast boot (about 20 seconds, I will check again once I will have removed some apps like Windows Live and McAfee)

    - beautiful screen, very slightly more glossy than the X11, with a little warmer colors, but really stunning overall !

    - nice backlit keyboard, and typing experience is nice so far

    - the trackpad clearly looks like plastic

    - the fan is spining constantly, but you can only hear it if you put it close to your hear. So it's very quiet while doing basic tasks

Yes, it's possible to upload pictures to this site. You should see the option to do so below where you enter your message in the additional options box. Although, i'm not certain if a minimum number of posts are required to do so.

    Thanks for the pics!
    The Z2 is truly beautiful.
Say...how big is the box? Was it heavy with everything inside?

Yes, the bog is quite big and heavy compared to other Vaios, or Macs.

The main reason is the PMD, and the power brick that goes with it.

That said, everything is well separated and protected inside, so I guess it's cool that way...

Congrats with your new Vaio Z! :D

I was actually wondering, that Power Media Box (or what the name is) with the External GPU and optical disk drive, is that optional or is it included if you buy the basic Vaio Z21? (Just wondering :p)

Some comparison shots with the Vaio X11, the black color on the lid is clearly different (the texture as well).

In Europe the PMD is optional.

    Really?
    That's hateful :(

EDIT: Oh yes, I see it on the Vaio Website.

The fact that you can choose to get it or not is quite cool in my opinion.

The bad thing is that you can't buy it alone without having already got one bundled.

Moreover the price of this PMD is already high bundled, so I can't understand how much it will be sold alone...

Yeah, it's cool that the PMD is optional, but if you don't buy the PMD, then I think you're missing the point of the Vaio Z21, right? :p

yes and no, there's no other laptop like the Z even without the PMD if you want standard voltage and light. The toshiba is a lot heavier and others have ULVs. Could buy a USB DVD reader for 40EUR that's 10x less than the PMD when you need to install stuff.

Can you post some pics of the battery charger? I have a SZ4 and it is very big and heavy. I wouldn't like to buy a light laptop if the adapter is very heavy...

    thanks!

It's a nice piece of kit but IMO the previous Z's looked better. I would've expected a Vaio of this caliber to look more state of the art. Looks like the common basic Lenovo.

the adapter isn't enormeous but its pretty big. i find it stupid for such a laptop too.
when i had a panasonic the charger was really small. Sony's one is standard sized and its, well, again, just bad

Thanks for the answer. There are some things that can make me decide to buy another laptop (maybe macbook air): weight of the adapter (if we add the weight of the laptop+adapter, the sony wouldn't be that much lighter...), trackpad, fan noise, speaker... sony vaio z has lot of connectivity ports and some other benefits, but I have a lot of doubts...

    thanks!

i was hesitating with the air too. lets be honest: the new i7 ULV is very very fast and not so far from the standard voltage one, although, theres still a decent gap.

i took the Z for the following reasons:

    - windows runs properly (on the mac air apple drivers have limited energy saving support)
    - its lighter even if its just 150gr, thats also about the weight of the adapter !
    - it has a much better screen and higher resolution (this was one of the strong points for me)
    - it has a good SSD - the SSD on the mba is like lottery and even the best one doesnt hold a candle to the gen3 ssd of the z
    - better battery life regardless of the os
-didnt actually care for the pmd or the lack of proper gfx card

I also was eyeing the toshiba portege btw its like 1,6kg and pretty decent too.
Finally, the asus that comes out in september, forgot the codename, that is similar to the mba looks VERY good. I couldnt wait myself but if I were you since youre eyeing the mba and the Z2 I would take very hard look at the next asus.

    Good luck!

Could you elaborate a little on this, maybe some pics of what you think makes it fragile?

I've got the Z1 and very happy about it, but the loose and fragile hinge is driving me insane, and had hoped the poor design would be improved in 2. Any additional insight, would be greatly appreciated.

Oh come on, lenovo laptops are just ugly compared to the Z2 yet I prefer VPC-Z1 design. I just don't understand why they didn't keep the thin bezel of the VPC-Z1...
VPC-Z2 thinness forgives a lot though
