When I open the lid or adjust the angle of the lid, sometimes the image on the lcd gets jumpy, sort of faded, tiny white dots/lines cover the screen. If I re-adjust the angle of the lid the problem flickers in/out then goes away. It got so bad that I pulled apart the laptop to see if I could spot a loose connection and partially pulled the lcd bezel but didn't go as far as taking the lcd out. I didn't see anything bad so put everything back together. The problem still happens but not nearly as much and I blew out all the dust in there so now the fan runs way quieter.

I am probably going to replace the lvds cable because of the symptoms and how the cable runs right through the left hinge. I have the part number and see it's available for about $55 (of course it's 10x as much as all other models). I have the service manual and feel capable of changing the cable myself except the possibility of damaging the connection points on the main board & lcd. I can tell by looking at the mobo that there is probably some secret to getting the tiny connector off without breaking something.

Has anyone changed this cable in a z540?
Has anyone seen a similar symptom?
Did replacing the lvds cable fix it?
    Any other thoughts?

    Thanks
I will try to post pics and how to....
