    Is it worth it to:

    - upgrade the ram from 3GB to 4GB for $100

    - upgrade the hard drive from 320GB 5400 rpm to 250GB 7200 rpm for $130?

or should I just order it as it comes?

Ram: No. You can get a 2GB single module for $80-$90 and upgrade it yourself and have a backup DIMM in the event one goes bad some day. Though you will also need to be running a Vista x64 to actually address more than 2GB to any process. Not to mention, its highly unlikely one would be performing the kinds of functions that require that much ram on a laptop designed for portability.

HDD: No. Not only are SSD's drastically decreasing in price, you can actually buy a 320GB 7200RPM for $160 and use the one it replaces as an external backup drive. If you are too uncomfortable to upgrade the hard drive then the upgrade might be worth it.

If you order a preconfigured model, its going to be built in Japan (I can't compare the quality of a China Built CTO, but some have complained). It will also ship as soon as your payment processes.

You also may find it valuable to consider the Z540 as the Z570 drastically decreases the performance to dollar ratio with little to no speed gains in most scenarios.
