    Hello guys,

I'm planning to buy a Sony Vaio Z13 in the next days but I don't know if I should order the glossy or premium carbon edition!?

Therefore I'd like to know if anyone could upload some photos of both versions for me so I can compare them. I've already searched the forum but couldn't find good photos which are still online. Google couldn't help neither.

Is the glossy carbon version very prone to fingerprints and scratches?

It would be great if the Z13-owners could help me out!

    Thanks
    Oley

My experience has been that it shows fingerprints, but not as much as glossy surfaces. It really does a good job of hiding them. It seems to resist scratch really well, but hey i put mine in its case when I'm done with it.
So it willl depend on your usage. Some people throw their laptops around and use it with greasy chips and fried chicken hand....I dont.

I got the glossy one and I can tell you this:

    1. It is very shiny almost blinking

    2. For fingerprint it is a fingerprint catcher

    3. Can’t be scratched easily the glossy coating prevent scratching very well.

    4. The glossy coating is not perfect on the borders!! Seams waving!! I’ll update picture if possible

Got the non glossy one. It does attract fingerprints but not nearly as bad as any glossy laptops I have seen. However, don't expect it to be as scratch resistant or hard as a MBP's aluminum. If you push hard enough, the LCD can bend and start pushing keys and waking your laptop out of suspend mode. However, that has never happened to me yet unintentionally.

My lid got scratch a month ago, so I got the carbon fiber stick from SGP Skins from SGPStore.com

I have the non glossy premium carbon fibre lid.
It does pick up a bit of fingerprints and smudges but not as much as the glossy lids which I have seen on display in the Sonystyle shops.

Here's an innocent question for you then.
Can you tell me what the differences are between Carbon Fibre and Premium Carbon Fibre?

With the older VGN-Z, the Carbon Fibre came in three or four types in Japan (the Sakura pattern, Mosaic, Waves etc etc). Whereas the Premium Carbon Fibre only has the 'brushed' pattern, and comes in the matt or glossy variant.

...so, the patterns and glossiness aside (and the price too, where the PREMIUM was more expensive than the non-premium if I remember correct for the older machines), what are the differences? I mean, if the above are the only differences then did the older owners pay US$200 extra for a regular carbon fibre lid, to US$400 extra for a gloss coat consisting of a simple brushed pattern...?

Thanks a lot for the responses so far.

It would be interesting if other users made the experience that the glossy cover is not very good at the borders...Does anyone?

It would be very nice if someone could take a picture of their proper laptops to see how the glossy and the non glossy covers look like!

    Thank you

I know it's not really helpful without a link, but someone posted a fantastic video earlier this year showing both the premium carbon and the glossy side by side (I think for the Z11, but should be exactly the same for the 12 and 13 I think). Really illustrated the difference. I will search around for it and post it if I find it, but I know it's out there in this forum if you want to get searchin'. Maybe someone will remember and have a link to it?

Edit: Sweet I found it. Didn't expect to that quickly...

matte premium carbon. you can see some minor fingerprints at the top edge but I would not call it a fingerprint magnet. The fiber look actually can only be seen in bright light (preferably sunlight). If it is too dark, you will just see a black lid.

    Hello people,

thanks to everyone, who helped me out. I think I will get the premium non glossy edition eventhough the glossy one looks a bit better. The video was very helpful to see the differences between both versions.

    Thanks again

I have the non glossy version and it gets scratched very easily :(

Mine got some ugly scratches just because I put a small book on top. :(

    Silver.

Advantages: no fading, scratching, smudges, always looks good.

Hmm, I kind of regret not getting the metal mosaic as you can't get it anymore. (I got the carbon fiber. I like it though)
