If you tell us your budget and what you plan to do with your notebook, we can better assist you. We have a "What should I buy?" FAQ in the hardware forum. My personal opnion of Sony is that they are overpriced. Good Luck.

    hi,
I don't want to spend over 1500 give or take. clearence club has a bunch of vaios a series for 1500 and under. I am torn between a t42 or a dell 6000. I don't do anything except surfing the web and writing articles. I want to watch dvds when i travel that's all i really do. i keep reading sony has the best screens.
by the way, guys like me are very lucky to have folks like you help us.

The T42 over the Dell any day, as a T42 owner I may be a little biased. ThinkPads are the best built notebooks and their service takes a backseat to no one although they do not do wide or glossy screens. Also, IBMs have the best laptop keyboards if you are doing a lot of writing. One I think you may be overlooking is the Fujitsu s6231. It is light at four pounds, like IBM very well built and has a very good glossy screen. In my opinion, better than Sonys although Sonys are good as well. You can configure one at PortableOne.com. Upgrading to the 5400RPM hard drive, which I recommend, you'll be right at $1500 and it comes with a three year warranty. Plus free shipping and no tax unless you are in CA. The s7010 is a similar model with a 14" screen versus the 13.3" on the s6231. Good Luck.
