What is the actual weight of the sony vaio z. I have been reading different reports. Some sites say 3.0lbs and some say 3.3lbs.
It's a pretty big difference when at that weight level.
-
SSD models are 3.06 lbs.
-
I have seen discrepancies in the ssd models. I am talking about the new vaio z models which only come in ssd variations. Some are listed as 3.3lbs.
-
It's 3.06 lbs
-
3.3lb is probably with the extended capacity battery.

I wouldnn't be surprised if the optical drives had different weights.

I have just purchased a VPCZ13AHX/XQ
and I also purchased the Standard Battery and Extended Life battery.
Because I was curious I put my unit on a 10 lb postal scale [digital readout to 0.2 oz] to get you some good numbers and here's the result.
Standard Battery: 3 lbs 3.4 oz
Extended Life Bat: 3 lbs 8.6 oz

Depends on the configuration, I think VPC-Z can go up to 3.3 lb, but it starts from 3.04 lb. The older VGN-Z starts at 3.3 lb, so it could also muddle the water if some sites were still using the old VGN-Z specs.

Here's a post from someone who got the Hard drive model (no SSDs), then replaced his hard drive with an SSD. He gets a weight of 1325g or 2.92 pounds, I'm assuming with battery. That's probably the lightest possible configuration.

The Z weighs between 100 and 200 pounds usually, because it comes with its own human being attached.
Well that pretty much exhausted all the funny in me today so I'm going to go away... -
With no battery it would weigh much less than 3 lbs. I'm guessing 2.5-2.7. I checked mine on shipping scale this AM and come up with 3.1.
FYI 3lb 3.4 oz = 3.2lb -
-
My VPCZ122GX/B weighs 1380 grams (3.042 lbs) with standard battery. Measured on a +/-1 gram scale.

wow so all these answers confused me even more
how is it possible that everyone is getting different weight?
which model should I get if I want the lightest one? -
All these variations have been extreeeemely similar.....
-
Pyr0, where as your Z manufactured?
Mine's made in Japan. -
-
even a disk in the drive or a memoroy card in slot will make a difference. SInce we are splitting hairs even an 8gb (4x2) model could weigh more than a 4gb (4x1) model.

Interesting. I can actually feel the difference in .3lbs.
I am looking for the lightest 13" laptop and I narrowed it down to the vaio z although it's a little on the pricey side but I don"t see any competition out there. It is pretty much in a league of its own which is why it is so expensive.
hopefully I can pick up a 256gb core i5 4gb vaio z model for under $1500 soon. maybe after the holidays. -
Crus-T and beaups, that doesn't explain the similar low weight (1383 grams) of this high-end Z1 config:
[??]Sony VAIO Z117 ???? - ?????????? - SONY Z115??? - ePrice ??? -
seems that all VPC-Z are made in Japen mine is 1391 grams if it haleps !!
-
My Vaio Z12:
8gb (2 modules), WWAN, and replaced conventional HDD with SSD (so no optical drive for me), and the extended battery: 1505g. -
Is the vaio z still the lightest current 13" full blown laptop?
I currently have a samsung x360 which is actually lighter than the vaio z at 2.8lbs but its specs are getting a little old and I need something faster because I tend to have 60 firefox tabs open at one time -
It has a similar processor etc. as the Z, it has the dvd drive as well. But not the nvidia. A slightly larger screen (13.3" vs 13.1") at a lower resolution (768 vs 900 or 1080). And can be ordered with SSD (or HD). -
Yeah I looked at the r700 because I used to have an r500 with ssd and no drive which weighed an incredible 1.8lbs!
Unfortunately it weighs 3.2lbs which is more than the vaio z and it is also larger and thicker and less sexy even though it is cheaper.
From what I read in these forums people are recommending the vaio z over the R700. -
).
If there is a general consensus, and it's always easy to over generalize these things. The Z has the advantage of a dedicated graphics processor (which is only an advantage for those who value a dedicated graphics processor), and the screen resolution is a big plus on the Z.
Otoh, if those two things are not as significant for you as price, then the R700 wins hands down.
"Sexier" wise, don't forget the R700 has the magnesium case, which grants it all kinds of sexy, as far as that goes. I think that the R700 looks better (esp. vs. the Z palm rest).
The weight of the two seems about the same, I don't think I could tell them apart on weight in a blind comparison (I own both). -
^Don't forget screen quality, Z's screen is much better to look at than the R700 IMO (and not just resolution)
The R705 I've used comes with i5-4xx cpu and HM55 chipset too. Is it available with 5xx i5's or core i7?
Also, the battery in R705 is 10% higher capacity than the Z.
I like the looks of the Z better, but that's all just personal preference. I certainly wouldn't say the R705 is made out of better materials (except the palm rest of course). -
However R700 can be: i3-370, i5-460, i5-520, i5-560, i7-620
EDIT: Oops, I take back the first part. I see they do have now an R705 with i5-460.
