If anyone is able to watch this 1080p trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N2YWRJ-ppo and tell me what their cpu usage is that would be great. The reason I am asking is because my Z's cpu usage level hovers around 70% and I want to make sure if that is normal. To me, it seems to be a bit high since flash 10.1 is suppose to support gpu acceleration on flash videos.![]()

I'm getting the same here... with the same specs as yours.
-
-
I'm opening with firefox (IGP) and cpu usage of firefox.exe is around 60% with IE is around 70%
PS. Same Z spec but cleaned install windows
Edit: changed to 1080p result -
Hi, Keisuke28!
I'm also on Firefox, with a clean install. Using the nVidia chip, I see an average CPU utilization of ~17%, while with the Intel chip, the average is about 7%. Kind of backwards, but interesting!
Cheers!

Whoops, I'd missed that. Here I go again...

Hi, Keisuke28!
OK, that makes more sense. I get a CPU utilization of about 60% on the nVidia chip (max performance), and about 70% with the Intel chip (power savings).
Unfortunately, that's the end of my experiments on the Z today - my iPad just arrived!
Have Fun!
Mark -
just checked it on my Vaio Z...CPU usage is between 9-14% !!!!!
-
Probably it's more than yours due to Avira Antivirus program running in the background.
-
Thanks for the test guys, seems like it's normal... Also, you guys have adobe flash 10.1 beta 3 installed before doing the test right?
-
Remember one thing....BETA!
-
my S series seems to stutter somewhat. youtube is not a good test.
there whole site has been screwy the last month. download this and run it
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...38-d0f60da6fb54/Coral_Reef_Adventure_1080.exe
it extracts a HD 1080p video -
Sorry guys, dont mean to hijack the thread but I have a 13" MBP and am debating about switching to the new Z. On my 2.53Ghz MBP, CPU utilization is about 20% playing that youtube video in 1080p and over full screen. My guess is that its the beta of flash thats causing the issue.
-
It shouldnt stutter, even if you have regular flash 10 that uses only the CPU. The CPU alone just be enough to pay HD, just make sure its in performance.
And like Boo Boo said,
the Windows Media HD demos should be a good way to test HD: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx -
I don't have a Vaio Z, but on my TT I am getting about 60% cpu usage on 1080p full screen with flash 10.1 beta 3.
-
quick one: it looks like the GPU acceleration is really only working when in full screen mode for some reason (maybe because then the driver can direct render the thread or something instead of having to decode the H.264 and then scale it within the Desktop Windows Manager (DMW).
One quick to test this: start the task manager, go to the performance tab where you see the CPU usage with a time elapsed graph. Run the video windowed (1080p of course) for a little while, you see all cores in the 60-70% range. Then full screen for a little while and come back to windowed to see the result: In my case, you can see that the CPU reduced DRAMATICALLY ! -

What nvidia graphics card drivers are you using?
-
bit late to the table here but i can confirm the same 60% nvidia, 70% intel on the windowed 1080p.
good catch about the full-screen making cpu drop down. -
-
in full screen, my CPU goes down to about 2% when playing this video. The high CPU usage is only on windowed flash.
Cheers -
Ok, I'm dumb.
This thread is all about Adobe Flash 10.1
10.1 is BETA, you have to install it separately, it is NOT the latest version installed by default. So, what am I running currently in Firefox?
yep: 10.0
So the result I see makes total sense since 10.0 started to leverage the GPU for H.264 decoding BUT ONLY IN FULL SCREEN MODE !
Two more things though:
- The GT330M is NOT part of the officially supported card for this hardware acceleration (which seems odd since the 240M is and everybody said that the 330M is nothing more than a faster 240M I believe??? Then again, there are NO 3xx series card in the official support list). See http://www.nvidia.com/object/gpus_supporting_adobeflash.html
- The Mac is probably the wrong platform as Job and Adobe haven't exactly been the best of friends. In fact, from the latest release notes from 10.1 :

This kind of sucks having come from an Envy 15 with a Radeon 5830 I expected the same performance with flash with my new Vaio i5-520m.
I get around 70-80% CPU when playing any 1080p video off of youtube.
Does this mean that we have to wait for Nvidia or Adobe to add in hardware decoding for our graphics cards then?
