What do you mean by 'wiped by DVD'??

If you used a restore/recovery DVD to wipe it, that should either have returned you to the point at which the recovery DVDs were burnt, or maybe to the factory-fresh condition off the recovery partition on the hard drive.

That is, I'm assuming it wasn't just a DVD containing one file: format.exe ?

Otherwise, it sounds like you will need operating system installation media, in CD, DVD or USB stick format, to boot your computer off and follow the installation procedure.

Did your notebook come with recovery DVDs? If not, you are probably dead in the water here. You need the disks to restore from.

'Dead in the water' is a trifle strong when you can just boot off a(ny) Windows install DVD/USB stick & do a clean install, don't you think?

It will take longer than an automated repair/recovery, but carries benefits of its own, & I'm still far from clear that that isn't what the OP was actually trying to accomplish in the first place.

I think Smart-Girl refers to the massive SSD confusion about TRIM and secure erase stuff.

In any case, just wipe your drive / delete partitions and reinstall from scratch/ use recovery disks and you are all set - new partitions will be created in the windows setup routine.

Vaio recovery centre should restore the Vaio recovery partition from where it's hidden on the hard drive and return your computer to the state it was when you first bought it.

Note that unless you made your own recovery discs, you will lose anything that you saved on the computer between buying it and wiping it. But this should give you a working computer which is better than one with a blank hard drive!

    Restore complete system, probably.

I must say that I'm guessing here (albeit educated guessing), as I never use built-in recovery functionality on computers. But one of these options will recover your OS to factory state!

Restore complete system is the option you want to take. You didn't need to worry about creating system restore disks, since you already have those in your hands.

Yes, I am very much a "night owl". Since you have a set of disks in your hands, the only reason to create a set now is to have a spare set.

If you wish to get your system back to the same way it was when the original owner took it out of the box, then yes Restore Complete System will do that. It will wipe out EVERYTHING on the hard drive and restore it back to the original out of the box state.

At this point you have only two choices.

    1. Restore from the DVD's you got from the seller. Taking the Restore Complete System.
    2. Do a clean install.

A clean install will require that you have:
    1. A real Windows install disk (cannot be use the restore disks you have)
    2. A clean install guide for you particular model (available elsewhere here on NBR. You'll need to find this yourself.)
    3. A complete and I emphasize COMPLETE set of all the drivers and libraries listed in the clean install guide.

That's pretty much your only options.

First stick with Vista for a couple of days and make sure everything is functional. No battery messages, wireless works, all the function keys work.

Next, apply all of the Windows Updates to Vista. Run Windows update as many times as necessary until it says you have applied ALL updates.

Then obtain a licensed copy of Win7. And let it UPGRADE from Vista to Windows seven. Despite what others may say,Windows 7 is nothing more than a service pack to Vista. The structure of the operating system did not change at all, so it is easy to just let Win7 update itself over the top of Vista.

This will be much easier than trying to track down a clean install guide and all the drivers and libraries that you would need if you wipe out Vista and attempt to install Win7.

You MUST have a licensed DVD.

Once you have it fully updates I would use a tool like Acronis to image the OS partition to a series of DVD's or better yet an External drive. But to directly answer your question now that you have applied them no there is no way to save them.

RE: Partition magic, short answer yes. Long answer look at the MANY threads here on partitioning a hard drive. No need for me to repeat the options.

you can always download the vista service packs and burn them to dvd should you need them again. Saves time when having to reinstall.

    Vista SP1:
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) | Download, Deploy, Support

    Vista SP2:
Windows Server 2008 SP2, Windows Vista SP2 | Download Service Pack | TechNet
