I want something small, but don't want to wait for startup. Anything that boots between 30 seconds to a minute is good. Needs to do email, word processing, web, etc. Nothing gaming. I know the original "P" was slow. Is this one better?

I saw it going for $699.

Can you show me the link? I don't see any Vaio P on Microsoft's website.

I have the P788k with the 1.6ghz processor and 64gb SSD. I'm running Windows 7 on it and it's a pretty slow machine overall. It may be due to the fact that I have Raid 0 SSDs running on my Z and another 2.5" SSD on my other machine, but my P boots pretty slowly. I feel like it isn't that fast. The processor is pretty slow in terms of running SD Hulu or Windows Aero. I use it strictly to take notes in class and do light web surfing and it does those tasks fine. Just don't expect stellar performance from it.

The pros though are the wonderful screen, really good trackpoint, and small size- only 1.4 pounds and fits in my oversized inside jacket pocket.

I think my first gen and your second gen are pretty similarly specced up, so I hope these comments help.

Just did a time test. It took me 27 seconds to shut off completely with no programs running.

It took me 33 second to boot into my password screen. But then an additional 62 seconds to load into my home page before the spinning circle stopped loading completely. You could start pressing buttons before it finishes loading, but thought I'd just give you my time to totally boot into the homepage. It took me about 2 seconds to enter my password.

I have a fresh install of Windows 7 that was installed 9 days ago and don't have any many processes running at startup. I do have Windows Sidebar booting up with the system and I'm pretty sure that adds some time to the start time.

That's so strange the Microsoft store has the P, I tried looking on their website for it and didn't see it in the netbook section and didn't see it when I searched for "Sony Vaio."

So about a min and a half. Hmm I would've thought it would be faster with a SSD. For the same price \, I could get a average notebook that's batter than this but not this small or light. Hmm... Have to think harder again.

If you can, see if you can go into a store and take a look at the machine first hand. Your mileage may vary with speeds- it's possible mine is slower for no particular reason. Or you can hope someone else with a P shares their boot times since a study of one person isn't very scientific.

You may also want to post over on this forum: Sony Vaio P - Pocketables Forum There are a ton of P owners over there.

I found that this was the perfect netbook for me since it was ULTRA portable and performs the tasks I need it to. It didn't make sense for me to get a netbook that weights more than my Z!
