hey all i'm running a sz260p with windows XP and i noticed something odd. Once the battery charges up to 100% it still says "(charging)" next to i when you rest your mouse over the battery icon. if you click it it says charging as well. Shouldn't the charging and lightening bolt icon go away once it is fully charged?

One of my batteries recently died and I have a feeling it's because it kept overcharging it past 100%.

Your battery should not be charging past 100% The circuit voltage cuts off so it just runs off AC. I have seen my battery at 100% and it just says like "Full Charged" and plugged in.

yes i recall it used to say that a while ago as well but i wanted to make sure i wasn't just imagining that!

to add to the problem, i contacted sony tech support and they sent me a box to ship it to their service center and i did that. i even sent screenshots of how it looks on my laptop and on another dell laptop in the family to show the difference. however, the service center insists the machine is fine and just said "every machine is different" in response to the screenshots. they said they will be shipping it back without doing anything and just advised me to unplug my laptop when it reaches 100%. how unhelpful!

any suggestions on what to do next?

Well thats Sony tech support for you. They really are bad. I would say if you encounter anymore unusual sightings on your computer, call them back but I would say just leave as it is for now.

use a program like rmclock to see the actual charging status of your battery. it could be at 99.6%, and windows reports it as 100%. also, my tx770p shows 100% charging when the battery is totally full. it's pretty much normal.

Your BIOS is outdated. Update your BIOS and you won't have that problem.

Any of these bios updates will fix the problem. You won't have to erase anything, just run the executable.
