i have bought a 14" VAIO T (SVT14) from SONY's online U.S. store (went with CTO, although i didn't add/remove anything to the defaults, as the base default fits my price range and specs perfectly). i placed the order on Nov. 14, 2012 and was surprised when i received an email update from SONY telling me that the shipping date was moved forward from Nov. 23, 2012 to Nov. 15, 2012.

the FedEx tracking number says that the laptop was shipped on Nov. 16, 2012 from Romeoville, IL. however, i thought all CTO orders would ship from China? i got a bit worried, thinking that it might be a pre-configured laptop already in their storage facility that they have shipped to me, rather than what i had ordered online. anyway, i received the laptop today and upon opening the box, encountered clear fingerprints on the palmrest and the touchpad, and marks and scuffs and scratches on the back of the laptop, and one scratch on the lid.

i took pictures of these before turning the machine on in case i need to fight SONY. it was very hard to actually get these fingerprints and marks to show in the pictures. on my other laptop (VAIO SA), due to the not-so-good viewing angles, i have to move my head to find the sweet spot where the marks will appear on the pictures (what i mean is that they are visible in the pictures below, but you might need to adjust your viewing angles depending on your monitor). there are a couple of other marks and small scratches that i have not shown.

    fingerprints on the touchpad:

fingerprints / dirt marks on the palmrest and near the keyboard:

scratch on the lid (not as big as it shows in the picture!):

    scratches/marks on the back:

i think this laptop has been previously used, judging from all the fingerprints and other marks on the body. what do you think? should i contact SONY and complain about the fact that my CTO order was shipped in two days from Illinois rather than the factory in China and about all these clear marks? could this be a laptop that someone used for an hour or two then returned back to SONY and they've sent it to me?

also, on the back, there are two stickers: the one with the FCC regulations says MODEL: SVT141A11L and the other sticker where service tag is located says Product Name: SVT141190X. why are these different? could this have been a pre-configured laptop with some components (RAM or HDD) removed and downgraded (hence all the scratches and fingerprints) and shipped to me?

i'd appreciate any comments (and maybe any experiences you have had about a similar issue). thanks a lot.

    Very Strange.

    Regarding model and product name:
I have configured and bought my vaio s online. Model and product name are also different, so this seems to be normal.

thanks for confirming that. i still think it was a pre-configured model which was downgraded to my specs; the other alternative (a used/refurbished laptop) would really suck!
