Try using Vista's built in system restore to go back to a point PRIOR to your first install of an alternate video driver OR back to a point where you knew the function keys were working. Is this ONLY a brightness issue? What about the OTHER function keys? Do they work?

How did you reinstall the Sony utilities?
Did you Install Sony® Shared Library before
    Sony® Notebook Utilities.

If the brightness display shows and is stuck at full, then I had the same problem once. All I did was restart the laptop and it worked perfectly after.

Sounds like you still have a video driver issue then. You need to "undo" what you did when playing with the newer drivers. That may include doing more than just switching drivers. You may need to uninstall the "play" ones. I don't have the info at hand but there is a way to have device manager show all the unused devices and I believe unused versions of drivers and lets you remove them. I don't have time to search for it right now. Try google VISTA "UNUSED DEVICES" "DEVICE MANAGER" or something similar.
