is it okay to burn CDs/DVDs on a laptop frequently? will it shorten the life of my drive? or is it better to buy an external burner or something.

Using any piece of computer hardware frequently is going to wear it down over time to some degree. After all, there are physically moving parts involved and the laws of physics dictate that they are going to degrade from friction, heat, etc. - eventually. Question is, how long will that be? I don't think anyone could say with absolute certainty, but I would expect it should last the lifespan of the notebook considering most people get a new one every 3 years or so. I think with a reasonably good optical drive, you shoudn't have to worry much. If it wasn't meant to be used on a regular basis what would the point be of including it in the first place? Besides, if it does crump, well that's what warranties are for. ;)
