Hi i was wondering if i can upgrade my ghetto 4500 100gb to a SSD one. I went to sony style in SF today to buy a case for my TZ and the lady told me that the SSD hard drives are built in so you can't change it.

I was planing to buy this
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147021

But if i can;t change my Hard drive to SSD i guess i am going to install xp on it then....

oya my model number is VGA-TZ170N/B

It sounds like you would need a SATA SSD drive.

You may want to check out the last few posts of my New SSD Thread. Another Sony owner is trying the same but with troubles. Once installed, the SSD is recognized but the DVD is not; his system is IDE though and is a TX with XP.

Other than that, please feel free to check out the sites SSD articles and reviews below and jump in with any questions. There are lots of happy SSD Sony owners out there.

For most its simply a job of changing the drive to the SSD and reinstalling the OS and Voila!

You can figure out the connector type from your present HDD model. My Sony G11 came with the Toshiba MK1011GAH which has a ZIF (ribbon cable) connector, but the interface is PATA / IDE. It is possible that the newer TZs which can handle SSD + HDD have a different interface setup.

Too bad... I just erased the pics I took in my dissecting-session from my HDD... GRRRR (there we should have seen how they did it in the TZ...

I remember from a previous thread that the TZ uses a zif connector. According to the TZ150 specs, it should be an Ultra ATA drive. The users that are having problems after switching their drives should try updating their firmware to one of the TZ models that comes with SSD. That may solve their problems.

it is a UDMA ZIF 32/64 Samsung HDD. you can swap it yourself if you don't have fatty fingers. All you need is to open the rig and swap the 4200RPM 100GB with the SSD. Again, this should be done only by people who know how to handle delicate electronics

wait, i'm a bit confused. does that mean the SSD linked from newegg wouldn't work bc it lacks the zif connector?

does the HDD+DVD setup need the zif too, or only the HDD/SDD configurations?

You'll need the SSD with ZIF connectors for all current generation notebooks like the TZ ...

For older ones like the Dell Lat X1, you can use the one linked from newegg.
