Help.I am trying to transfer audio from cassette to my vgn ns 10l using audacity and the mic line in but it is distorted.I think the cassette output level is too much for the mic line in.Is there a better way?
Thanks

Mic/Line In plug is just fine for your project and should work just fine. Here's the setup you need.
A couple of things you need to know before you start:
1) you need a straight line out from the cassette player (has a set volume not affected by the casette player volume knob/slider). If you use and amplified output you need to set the volume accordingly to avoid distortion from a scale from 1 to 10, 10 the loudest I'd say 2.
2) disable (uncheck) microphone boost as shown.
Test the input without any program running first. The mic/linein input is live when enabled. Usually it's muted. -
Thanks Twiz I'll try it

If it's a line out and not headphones out, you should be fine. I.e. from the phono plug (known as RCA plugs in the US) outputs.
Just make sure you do not have "Microphone boost" turned on in the Windows control panel. -
umm...mic in is mono, isn't it?

The mic in your typical laptop is mono, but the mic input is usually stereo. I'm not sure about what audio chips the NS has, but for the Z, there's a checkbox in the control panel under "enhancements" for when using a mono microphone.
Note that most PC "microphone" inputs aren't really mic inputs at all, but line level. If you try to plug in a "real" powered mic, it will sound just awful - it expects el cheapo "PC" mics.
Anyhow, it should work just fine with any line level signal, as long as microphone boost is turned off. -
cheers Iam grateful for any help
