So when i put my computer into sleep sometimes i slide it onto a table, or put it in my backpack (inside a case) and now and then it will be back on when i go get it again.....

I tested it out and opening and closing the lid/pushing buttons doesn't wake it, the only thing i can do to wake it is push the power button which is sunk in (its an sr series)

Is there something like a time period where it will wake up from things like the lid lifting up or something?

There is a programmable timer that can wake up the machine to do scheduled jobs, like defragmentations, backups, indexing or pretty much any other scheduled task that has "Wake the computer to run this task" checked.

There's also an option to hibernate the system after it being on standby for a while -- to do so, it wakes up the system to do the hibernation. If the hibernation fails, the system will likely be left in a running state. (The main cause of hibernation failing are 3rd party drivers -- in my experience, non-WDM certified video and audio drivers are the main culprits.)

In other words, double-check the settings for all scheduled tasks, as well as the Vaio control panel for when to sleep and hibernate. If hibernation doesn't work reliably on your machine, you might as well turn it off.

hmm ok the wake thing was on, I will try that. I'm a little worried now though when I last had my laptop on it was at 25%ish and when I turned it on now it was at 5 so somehow it turned on in my backpack *sigh*
