I was browsing on portableone intending to buy the sz or macbook. And when I was confugring the sz, there were options on the harddrive. It said that it could configure it to 7200rpm harddrive. How come no other place can do this but here? Will this be safe and fully compatible on the sz?

I would not doubt it's doable but I might call to make sure. I think his name is Ivan. Either that or post this question on the Portable One section here on Notebook Review Forums. I've heard only good things about Portable One so far. Resellerratings.com last time I checked looked OK concerning them but you may want to check RR out if you haven't already.

They buy their SZ's from Sony, other re-sellers, whomever, then open them up and remove the hard drive that Sony ships them with and then they install OEM hard drives that they have purchased somewhere else.

You can easily do this yourself as well if you want. A good OEM 7200 RPM 100GB hard drive runs about $130-$150 and you can then sell the Sony hard drive on eBay.

Be aware that Sony will no longer provide warranty coverage/support for the new OEM hard drive or any software installed on the OEM hard drive, that would fall to Portable One and/or the OEM manufacturer to cover.
