A friend of mine is getting me to find a laptop for her and I came across this sale on this sony laptop. I feel it's an excellent price but I'm a little concerned about the warranty if she happens to need it. The warranty is only one year and I assume it covers basic things like if a part goes bad (I can't seem to find any detailed info on the warranty, so if anyone knows what is all included I would like to know). The big problem I have is that the warranty is only for one year and extended warranty is overly expensive.

So, lets say a part in her laptop dies after the warranty is over, what kind of options does sony offer? Is she able to send it in and pay for it to get fixed or is that going to be really expensive? (compared to extended warranty which is an extra 1 year it is $200 and for 2 years it is $330)

Anything else you guys can think of before buying a sony laptop?

Extended warranties are always expensive. Does she have a credit card that offers free extended warranty? In Canada, I have a master card (BMO, Airmile card, no fee) that offers one year extended on top of manufacturer's warranty.

Besides that, I do not have extended warranty on my $2000 Vaio TT180c. It really depends on how she intends to use it. Most laptops, especially Sony are quite rugged. If she drops it, there is no warranty that can cover it (in Canada, may be there is one in US, but probably expensive).

I would check the price of at a SonyStyle store locally so it does not have to go through courier.

BTW, search for a thread that discuss about this particular model, and see what people have to say here.
