I have a VAIO VGN-AW21Z with a small solid state C Drive which is becoming megga full and in the red  So I need to take action and uninstall some of the pre-loaded crap.

Have been down the list and removed all the things I feel confident about but there are some other large files there which I am unsure about and hope some of you can tell me what they do. As I only use my lappie to process photos using Adobe PS, a bit of iTunes, web browsing and emailing........ so I don't need any other specialist type stuff (gaming or producing videos etc).

The following list are what I would like to remove if I knew it is safe to do so. What do they do?
    Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard (759mb)
    VAIO BD Menu data (969mb)
VAIO DVD Menu Data Basic (543mb)
    VAIO Wallpaper Contents (134mb)
    WinDVD BD for VAIO (113mb)

If I could safely get rid of that lot it would help a bit. What do you reckon?

ALSO this machine runs on VISTA and I heard that Windows 7 is a far smaller file. Is it possible to upgrade to 7 and to delete Vista??? That might make a huge difference if it is possible????

Thanks in anticipation of your informed responses.

    Cheers

If your C drive is really 'megga' full, now is not the time to upgrade your OS as that does take space. Yes Windows 7 takes less than Vista, but you need operating room to move files around.

Your best bet is going to be to move all of your media files to an external temporarily to free up large chunks of space. Once you have a third of the drive free (Less if you have a very large drive) go ahead and update your OS. You will not be disappointed with Windows 7.

I would also can Adobe, but only because it is so large and inefficient. Yo can find lots of lightweight PDF readers for free online. But really, all of those things that you are listing above are pretty small compared to your media files probably. If you have lots of video, back it up and delete it. Or think about creating a media external drive so as not to crush your C drive.

You did not say what type of ssd drive you have, but you know how manic people are around here about garbage collection and TRIM. Long write times may be a result of just poor garbage collection.

You can safely remove VAIO Wallpaper Contents. I have done it; its just a vast collection of Sony brand wallpapers in various screen sizes.
As for the rest, keep it (I would keep WinDVD BD for VAIO, as this software is needed to play Blue Ray Discs.)

Disable windows restore and that should give you back around 10GB if your drive is a large one.

Do you have D: drive? Enough space on it? You can move paging file to it.

To upgrade to Windows 7 you may need (depending on whether it's same edition upgrade or not) up to 17GB free on C: drive. So it may not be a solution.

Doing disk cleanup, going into advanced cleanup and deleting old restore points should reclaim some more of drive space (depends on how many driver reinstalls and Windows updates you went through).

Do you use hibernation? If not, turning this feature off will reclaim disk space equal to amount of RAM on your laptop. I did this temporarily to get enough free space on C: to upgrade to Windows 7, which is indeed somewhat more efficient with disk space than Vista.

    Acrobat
it is full version not just Reader, rather valuable software. Even Reader became huge, I found Lite version someone made works fine but standard Acrobat is useful for creating, editing PDFs.

    BD menu and Data basic
I suspect lots of templates with short movies, high resolution backgrounds etc, you can move those folders to ext HDD or DVD and if you ever need them you can just enter new path.
    Wallpapers
same thing , can save those unused somewhere else.
