i bought a s480 from sony , just returned it last week for reasons you can probably understand as well.
other than heat issues, the fan noise was extremely annoying as well, i have never heard of a annoying fan on a notebook before. loud yes, annoying, no. I dont think you were wrong in trying to get rid of it. -
Well I had a S3 series but returned that as well because of the fan noise. If you liked the notebook though I can recommend the S5 series which has a much quieter fan. You won't get it for that cheap though I guess..

Yea I would recommend the S5 series if it's the heat issues that you are worrying about. I have the newer bios from Sony China and it's definitely cooler than the S570 I had. On the S580 fan noise is somewhat audible, but it doesn't bother me much. Supposed the fan noise on the S5 is better than on the S4 series. If the heat and fan bothered you, then you made the right decision because those issues are pretty important if you are going to be using this device every day. Besides, you made some money off of the deal =).
did I mess it up?? (sold my S460)
