    Main differences:

VGN-Z610Y/B (pre-config model) - "Official" Vista 32-bit & 64-bit support, assembled in Japan, rest of the specs are "fixed."
VGN-Z540 (CTO model) - "Official Vista 32-bit support, assembled in the USA, can be configured to whatever is being offered at point of order.

By the way, the following link has the exact full specs of the VGN-Z610Y/B notebook:

could it be that the screen panel is different ? the z610 seems brighter to me (or maybe its just a driver thingy)

I have moved my drive from the z610 to the z540, and on the z540, the fan is almost always constantly on, but on the z610 it was quiet most of the time.
the configuration of the machines is the same, except the processor which is a p8400 instead of a p8600 on the z610.

any idea why this is happening and how i can make it quieter ? its really annnoying. the only thing i can think of, is that its a because its not he same bios, or there's are other changes in hardware.

ps: i've opened it up, and it looks somewhat clean inside (the fan)
