the existing one is already THE best
not sure if SONY will offer even better displays
that will make me buy the third Z.
OMG...
-
-
I humbly think that it will at least be equal to the current VPC-Z series. I guess it will most likely be slightly better than the ones being offered in the VPC-Z series. Surely, it can only be better & not worse, right?
-
seriously I just bought my second Z, it may be a bad move, consider the Sandy Bridge CPU is out there and the possibility of getting a better display -

I'm thinking that Sony might use the same display... i mean the lid of the current Z is freakishly thin, as anyone can attest to and it's the same form factor, so there's a very high chance they're just using the same Toshiba display. If there's any news of a 13.1" 1080p IPS display coming out, tell me!
-
I just grabbed a Z1390 refurb, has i5 580m, 128SSD, premium carbon fiber, 1080p, and other standard config for about 1550 shipped w/tax
I am yet to see the condition of the system, since last time I bought a refurb, which has several noticeble scratches, which is a put-down. So the quality really varies
I am interested in swapping my 2 X18's into the system to make it fly - I do have another system with i7-620m - my wife is using it. But I hear rumors that i5-580m actually outperforms i7-620m, so i decide to use i5 instead.
Hope sony would not introduce an IPS panel with FHD, that will make me regret for quite a while. -
I kinda hope they use the same since I just bought another before they launch the new system, but I also want they to introduce an IPS panel at FHD...because I really want to see it happen -

I think it really depends on the competition. The current Z screen panels are made by Toshiba, and it's quite frankly the only 13 inch 1080p screen on the market. As a consequence, the prices are rocket high (which contributes to the overall cost of the Z) and the only way of pulling it down is to have better competition.
We're stepping into the 2011 era and there's still no 1080p 13" screen. The closest competitor is the Macbook Air which has a 1440x900 screen. If Sony were to keep the new Z on the same price level as the current Z, sure it'll be possible to make a better screen. However, if Sony attempts to cut the price a bit then I wouldn't be suprised if an inferior panel comes out.
One thing I'm sure regardless of the competition though, the display HOUSING will be much stronger than the current Z. -
What do you mean by "housing"? -
The lid that "houses" (contains) the display. The current VPC-Z uses a carbon fiber lid, claimed to be a "perfect balance between durability and weight", but in reality it is weak sauce.
-
Please don't make stuff up. We don't know if the new one has a more durable lid.

it makes sense to use a harder case, but I assume the current ones already good in terms of lightness and hardness?
Not expecting sony to use IBM material -
The current one isn't bad. Still, you are making an assumption that the next one will be more robust. Look at all of the Sony lids dating back to the T series through the VPC Z. They are all this "flimsy." In order to keep this thinness, you can't really do much with the current technology of material to make it better.
If you change it to metal, the metal will dent and can't really bend back after an impact. With the CFRP lid, it flexes so it can withstand getting hit and bends back to its original form. What do you want, something more rigid? Then it will just snap and break. -

it's pretty... and it's of the VGN-Z. -
I don't see the image but I think I know the one you're talking about. Is it of someone holding the Z by the screen? lolol
@brian, I'm just playing devil's advocate here. It's possible that the new Z's screen will be slightly sturdier since it has that aluminum/ metallic element on the bottom of the lid. That may help in some sense, but I'm not sure.
I just wanted to draw the line between speculation and fact since we don't know if the new lid is sturdier or not for sure. -
I love the CF lid, it is maybe only slightly lose to the old IBM super durable material (not the current Lenovo lids), such as in X41, maybe my X61s.
I love VAIO Z as it beats up thinkpad X series like a adult vs. child.
Used to be a thinkpad fan, but now the thinkpads are really for the mass, not for laptop enthusiasts, or elites -
It's molded plastic with a small amount of milled carbon fibres mixed in. This increases stiffness, and allows the manufacturer to use thinner molds for the same stiffness, but does not increase tensile strength like real carbon fibre weaves you find in planes, skis, surfboards, race cars et cetera.
As for "premium carbon fibre", that's a finish, not a material. It's lacquered with a glittery finish, and then brushed to look like carbon fibre. -
-
Well it's Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic. This is the material used on the chassis, and as you can tell it's strong and light. Carbon fiber on the Z is more for practicality than for eye candy, although the "carbon fiber" lid option is quite nice looking.
-
What the Z's chassis and lid has is not reinforced with carbon fibres - a small amount of recycled fibres are added to the plastic. But it is no more CFRP than pig iron is carbon steel because it has carbon. -
arth1 - what percentage of the Z's lid and D surface are recycled carbon fiber? Meaning what % is "a small amount"?
-
arth1 direct quote from the wikipedia page you linked to:
"Covers of Thinkpads laptops from Lenovo/IBM and Sony use this technology."
Not stating it's necessarily accurate, but ironic perhaps.
And just for giggles http://b2b.sony.com/Solutions/subcategory/notebooks/ultra_portable/z-series
States they use "multi-layered carbon fiber" for the chassis and "encased in gorgeous lightweight carbon fiber (select models)" - I assume the second part is referring to the premium lid options.
You still contend that they are just dropping a "small" of recycled fibers into the plastic mold? And the premium carbon fiber lid option is just a fancy paint job?
Is Sony lying? -
Well whatever it is, it doesn't look like traditional carbon fiber.
It's my belief that this chassis material is strong enough to suit my needs so I don't really care. -
true, as long as it is the best on the market, what can we complian?
-
in terms of resolution yes, dont forget IBM has several IPS and AFFS panels
-
granted my vgn has held up a lot better than my old sz. so maybe the zpc is better yet than my vgn... but my sense is that there *is* room for improvement.
I won't harangue the point... I mean. 13.1, 1080p. no where else to go. -

Is it reasonable to wish that the iPhone 4's retina display can show up on a laptop? Larger size of course.
-
It's reasonable to wish anything. Is it reasonable to expect it? Not right now, too costly to do that high a pixel density (240dpi) and requires too much graphical power.
-
For lenovo, I usually spend 300-400 to buy a laptop priced at 1200+ -
I am positive that SONY Z will have better design/display/engineer - it is the premium line, no possibility they will not put $$ into developing better systems
-

sony vaio z vs. iphone 4 -
do you guys think new Z will have better display?
