I have a family member who is coming in town in a few days. She has a Sony VGN-C290 laptop with Vista on it. I'm gonna help her install XP on it instead. How involved will it be. Will I be able to easily find all the drivers on Sony's website or should I go somewhere else for the drivers?
Any suggestions on how to make this process quick and as pain free as possible?

I would look for the drivers now before you start, Just to make sure you get them all ready. The actual process of XP installation is easy enough but you may need to install the SATA drivers beforehand, This can make it bothersome.

Well, I just happened to check Sony's site and they appear to have pretty much all of the drivers for XP. I'm not familiar with installing SATA drivers beforehand like you mention. What is involved.
If worst comes to worst, I can just restore its VISTA OS in the hidden partition. -

I just checked the Sony site for drivers, there are full XP drivers for the C290, so you are in luck.

Reference my guide for other install notes, it should be pretty similar.

Also, PhilFlow's guide is very good:
