is this normal? either way i have a sony tech coming to the house in 3-5 business days to check it out
just got it in the mail yesterday
-
nobody eh?
-
Well, obviously if you can't get the drive to open when you push the button....
Does it make noises on boot-up when it's empty? A friend had that issue on another model.... -
na..the drive works fine and makes no weird noises
-
Dude, we ALREADY said it's normal in the other thread. Why make another one? It's a plastic faceplate. Damn, even sending someone to look at it. We all have the *&$#@ gap.
-
Whatever it takes to make you happy.

SR290 - mine is a little bit loose, but not as much as that. Either way, you can't expect it to be perfectly flush right up to the borders, otherwise you're going to have instances where the tray gets caught and doesn't close unless you nudge it, or over time it keeps scraping against plastic and will wear out, and people will complain about it then. The way Sony designed the DVD drive, there is no frame support on the bottom of the faceplate, so I think it's just the tray sliding mechanism holding the tray in place, thus there is much more give. If you take a look at a Dell 600m on the side, the computer frame/chassis is bordering the faceplate on the top and bottom, so the faceplate isn't going to have much to move.
If I forcibly push the faceplate downward, there will be a large gap, just because of the design. The best the technician can do is get you a new drive, but this is still going to be there. You can tape it up if you want, and there will be no gap, but you can't change the design of laptop. -
ummm.... this is very normal problem, I don't think it really affect any performance, are you looking for a perfect notebook? you'd better buy a notebook over 1500 and made in Japan.
-
well i guess ill just deal with it then no biggie, was just suprised
and i doubt buying a 1500$ laptop made in japan will be "perfecT" -
Every visit to the home by a Sony tech may be being "calculated" in financial terms and substracted from the warranty total allowed based on the price of your unit. You may want to ask about this from Sony before having the tech come to your home if the drive is functioning perfectly.
There are conflicting stories out there about how warranties work, and you don't want to waste coverage that you might need later.... -
If you open the memory and drive compartment, you can see it doesnt look pretty inside. Looks like its made at the sweat shop.
-
guy came to replace the optical drive, and its more loose then it was before. i just ordered a new one from J&R...hell if it comes with the same loose faceplate ill just keep it anyway since im getting more cashback this time around, and already have an image of win7
-
So now you have twins? You never give up on the Sony huh?
-
well no ill return this one regardless
-
well i got another SR 430 in the mail from J&R and the optical drive is way better. no gap....doesnt move much when i touch it........sending the other one back, ill even make out $120 cashback + extras
