I just sold my SZ650N and upgraded to a Z750D my previous laptop had vista, and this one has W7. Previous laptop was a 2.2Ghz and my new is one 2.66ghz and everything else is faster and better than my previous one.

Well im not sure what im doing wrong, but i downloaded the latest video driver to be up to date, and i tried to run some games that my SZ650 was able to run just fine, but with the Z750 it seems like its stuggling more, fan seems also louder as its working to hard, and sometimes the game would go black, and i would have to hit a few buttons to end up at the main menu or back in the game. few times the game would crash... im not very impressed with this laptop, unless windows 7 has some settings different or this laptop has some different features that i dont know about? I tried playing in "performance" mode (by hitting one of the buttons to go from silen, balanced, performance)

I just reformatted the laptop with Vista. Then i received my W7 CD upgrade and upgraded with a fresh reformat.

is there any online test i can run or something i can do to get some stats on my laptops performance to get an idea of whats going on, or some settings adjusted?

    thanks guys

Try different driver versions and always completely remove the old driver before installing a new one (even if you're going to install an older version).
It might also be a Windows 7 issue.
Try installing just Vista on your machine and see if that works better.
If it does, then upgrade to W7 and run the same games again and see what happens.
You should also try to turn off all unnecessary background processes, themes, etc...

There is also the "issue" of the native screen resolution on both the notebook models, which may have played a part in the "poor" performance:

    SZ650 - 1280x800
    Z750 - 1600x900

i noticed this in my display adapters, might this be giving me an issue? It says the device cannot start, and im wondering since i upgraded to a new NVIDIA driver it would do this... but wouldnt it show nvidia driver in there since i upgraded?

i tried to uninstall the standard graphics, and then restarted, and it installed it again, and still shows the same issue.

Then i tried to uninstall it again and downloaded NVIDIA driver from NVIDIA, selected W7 32bit, selected laptop, then i try installing that and i get the errors bellow... first error
    [IMG]

Then i tried to reinstall it and it gave me another error by saying my operating system is not W7 or Vista... this doesnt make sense to me at all...

Then i went to Sony.com to find my exact laptop model and it doesnt even show a "video driver" section... shows all others like audio etc etc... but no video driver tab??? this has to be the weirdest issue i had ever..

You installed Win7 32bit on your system? Are the Nvidia 32bit hybrid drivers out yet? I don't think so. Personally I think you should have install the 64bit version of Win7...otherwise you'll have to wait, if Sony (or someone (Nautis)) will release 32bit version of hybrid drivers for Win7 (if ever).

32bit Hybrid nVidia/Intel drivers have been out at Sony-Asia's support for a while now. But I've clean installed x64 so had no need.

    http://www.sony-asia.com/support/download/product/vgn-z26gn/modelfirst

The driver version is NOT the latest (well, not as recent as the x64 version), but it seems to support x86 Windows 7. That site there also has the upgrade companion disc setup files and instructions. This is all despite the fact that the Z26 is not part of the W7 upgrade promo...

Anyways, I've recently disabled Powermizer on AC and temperatures are about the same as on Vista. Of course, it uses less RAM and has less processes, but I don't really see much performance ups. I only see a 'prettier' interface which requires a learning curve (cough taskbar cough) which ain't favourable in a business environment...

    I have a question though...
Is it possible to get x86 Windows 7 drivers and apps (like EventService) WORKING on x86 Vista? I'm planning on factory restoring, then installing the new W7 x86 drivers to roll out some small (yet annoying) bugs I had with Vista. If not, then I guess I'll just try and get used to this...

    Cheers in advance

thanks sushi!!!!!! its all good now!! i even talked to sony, they said there is nothing i can do

however, external display works perfectly, but the laptop screen is having issues, it crams it all into one side and i tried restarting and adjusting resolutions and it stays crappy like that... the only way to get it back to normal is to "disable" the NVIDIA in device manager, and then when i hook up to external monitor, enable it.... maybe ill try to delete and install the driver again... but its the best available for now so there isnt much i can do i guess... wait till US sony releases a driver one day

    Glad to help

The scrunched-up screen; that is a common BIOS issue. Did you flash the BIOS to firmware R2170M3 BEFORE upgrading to Windows 7? I ain't too sure what the actual latest firmware version is for the US models, but I hear that the R2170M3 is more stable than the US version (though don't quote me on that - I can't remember where I saw that statement, but I did see it around here somewhere)

The Sony-Asia site actually says you can upgrade AFTER the upgrade, though people here seem to say otherwise... Personally, do it BEFORE the Windows Upgrade...

I would have to say Sony's instructions on their sites regarding W7 upgrades, rather bluntly, is vague and CRAP. I ain't too sure what sort of instructions you get with the promo pack (since I ain't eligible), but I imagine it should be rather vague as well...

Sorry about that, didn't know the 32bit version is out already. So you had 32bit Vista version before? Anyway, as 5ushiMonster said, the Speed mode problem is caused by the bios version. It should work even if you update the driver now.

im not familiar with BIOS flashing, is it basically just downloading BIOS driver and install ?

and the upgrade Win7 CD came with 32 or 64 bit win7... i had vista 64 before. i installed 32bit W7... when i tried installing the W7 64 bit i got an error saying my computer is not compliant, but having 64 bit vista wouldnt that comply with 64 W7?? ... or unless i made a mistake with vista and installed a 32bit instead of 64 and was only able to upgrade to W7 32??

Well if you had 64bit version of Vista, you should have upgraded to 64bit version. But if you're satisfied with the 32bit version, just update the bios and everything should be fine. You can find the bios in this post. I believe, you should use the R4043M3 version. The process itself is quite easy, you'll see instruction, when you'll run the exe.

You can only UPGRADE (that is, install Windows 7 from Vista) provided they are on the same platform; 32bit to 32bit, or 64bit to 64bit. You can't go from 32 to 64 or 64 to 32. I think it would have been better for you to upgrade from your x64 Vista (since x64 OSes are technically more 'futureproof' than x86).

Windows 7 OS discs come with ALL versions in the DVD. Setup installs the appropriate version of 7 (and platform) depending on the CD key you type in when prompted. So technically, you can install 7 x64 Ultimate with a Home Premium x86 disc so long as you have the right key.

You can always factory restore your Z back to x64 and then upgrade to Windows 7. But that in itself will take you at least half a day or so...

As I understand, you have to run the BIOS update with the Intel GPU on. I ain't too sure (it won't really matter I think).

    Good luck

Well, if I'm right, there is somewhere thread how to do clean install from Sony upgrade DVD. You should know, that if you would have a chance, clean install is always better.

Yes - that is true. Even though it is an upgrade disc, there are some users here who had success custom installing (aka clean installing) from those discs, even though license-wise that is not 'supposedly' possible.

Just backup what you have now. And try clean installing as it is now (by booting it with the disc in the drive.), and if that don't work, restoring Vista x64 and upgrading through that pathway is your only option...

    Good luck

I currently have 2 "upgrade" Win7 pro 32/64 bit CDs and i tried booting it and doing a clean install, but these are only "upgrade" CDs it doesnt let me boot, so i dont see how it could be possible at all to use it as a boot CD, unless someone did some tricks and mannaged to figure out something ?? Because technically it supposed to contain full Win7 on it correct?

As for going back to vista and upgrading to W7 64... i found my problem, since my computer didnt come with Vista recovery disc... yet my computer is able to run 64 bit... i borrowed my friends Vista CD.... but only now i realized that it was a 32 bit version ONLY and all this time i thought it was a 64. Even if i do go back to 32 vista and try to upgrade with W7 CD it would only upgrade to a 32 bit W7. In order to upgrade to a 64 bit W7 it would have to be a clean install, and to do that i have to be able to boot from the upgrade CD. But with upgrade CD it doesnt seem possible.

So my other option is this. Since my computer is able to run 64 bit, and i have a vista 64bit Cd key, i can torrent a Vista 64 .ISO and then be able to boot from it. Then be able to use my upgrade CD W7 and install 64 bit

Or, the other option is to find a W7 64 Pro, since i have that key as well, and make a .ISO booth CD from that and not worry about ever needing to go back to Vista and upgrade to w7, seems like it would be to much drama.

The sucky part is, i would have to spend about 2-3 days downloading these huge filed through a torrent, i think its my only option and i dont feel like buying anything from microsoft since i pretty much have all i need to be legit, minus the software lol

Well I have to say you messed up really many things. The first thing after you received your Z, you were supposed to make Vista Recovery DVDs. But saying this is no help. So:

I can't help you with my own experience, as I have original W7 disc and I did clean install, but I can point you to some helpful threads.

First of all, there is a guide, how to make bootable ISO from W7 upgrade, here.

Second thing, downloading Windows from not official torrent is illegal. But you should be able to download your copy legally from here.

    Good Luck!

Many ways to check - e.g. Start>right click on Computer>Properties and there you should see under "System Type" - 64-bit operating system.

You can find the graphic driver here under video.

Thanks mets, it's weird because Sony told me it's not available and I checked couldn't see video section

it bring available for z890 and not z750 why would this be? Would it give me some defects or anything extra that I would need to do to not have issues?

I guess Sony tech was just "not well informed" as usual. As you can see, the driver date is 10/13/2009 and I'm running on them for a while already as well...

Maybe you should read a bit more carefully. I already answered your question here. But from that time there's already new version for your computer here. You can bypass the version check by UniExtract.
