Hi Guys- am a newbie on here and was really looking for some help.
I bought the new F13SOE/B-its the recent one just out with the improved graphics card.
Anyway it is a beast and is very fast. But I find the fan very whiney even when its idle-so OK I understand that quad processor is heavy on the fan but it is really revs!
The other thing I really want to find out about is this. When I have the lappie open, even when it is idle, I get this intermittant beeping noise, a bit like a lorry reversing- only not as loud. Now I am not overly familiar with Sony but surely this isnt right. I looked at a few threads and some people suggested a mic settings work around in the sound settings. i tried this and absolutely no difference..so what is the noise - is it something to do with the whirring fan or is it a cpu issue or what?
I would be so grateful if anyone has some input as its driving me crazy. Only had the machine a week. The noise isnt loud but very noticeable when you are next to it- it jsut doesnt seem right if you know what I mean!!
    Thanks in advance :)

I don't have the F series but that youtube video sounds like it's BIOS related. I remember an old GIGABYTE desktop enthusiast motherboard a few years back, which had settings in the BIOS to give users an audiable BEEP when certain temperatures, or when certain fan RPM speeds were reached (ie, anything hardware based). And to be honest, that BEEP there sounds EXACTLY like the beeps I used to get all those years ago. Very similar duration too.

    - Can you try using HWMonitor and tell me what temperatures you're machine is indicating when the beeps occur?
    - Do the beeps occur when on AC or battery (could be power-state related).
    - When only on idle or when under load, or regardless?

...which brings me to gener8. Your fan glows? Like what, when you peer inside the side vents you see your fan glowing..? If it is the glowing you say it is (like a rally car and its brakepads), that is NOT good. Sounds like something is extremely, extremely hot. Would you be able to upload a picture?

The fact that this issue is inherited is indicating another issue which Sony may be too lazy too fix; think battery drain. Unless it ain't causing fires or injury, I wouldn't expect an update. I wouldn't be surprised to hear Sony calling the beeps a 'feature' a few months down the track...
...well, there was the CS and BZ fiasco with the fans making clicking sounds, which Sony decided to fix for free with free extended warranties to boot.

Hi Sushi-thanks for your really detailed reply!!I downloaded HW monitor-and when the machine is idle the CPU1 spikes at 79-81 degrees the other two seem stable at 43 to 48 degrees. CPU1 now at 86 degrees in the red all the time. This really doesnt look right(??) HDD Temp is 34degrees GPU temp is constant 39 degrees.
Now all these temps are when my machine is idle no other programs open and connected to the mains. Just beeps constantly, as in the youtube video.

OK well I may have been a bit overboard with the fan glow- it happened last night, again connected to the mains, and while it was in idle mode I felt the desk very hot by the fan outlet-looked at it and it was glowing orange. But TBH I am very ignorant about lappies, so didnt know if it was OK- the air intake was really hot to the touch, and the desk area on the left by the fan was baking. Today looking at the fan through the grid all is normal.Although I am monitoring it.
I really like the idea of Sony making these beeps a design feature :eek2: (Not!)
So is the high heat of CPU1 when idle acceptable (and safe)? What do you think I should do- should I take it back to the Sony Centre to get it checked out or what?
Thanks again for your help the download has proved to be very informative but I really dont know what to do now, if its a Bios prob its going to have to go back I guess.

well, the whining noise are quite common between the F series owners while the beeping sound are not. I would recommand contacting sony support and have them check it out for you.

Sounds like a bad CPU, for just one core to idle at around 80'C and the other at 40'C. The highest I've gotten my VGN-Z in terms of temperatures was the GPU, peaking at 97'C about 15 months back (been doing CAD).

You should note temperatures over 90'C will decrease the overall usage life, and anything over 100'C is very bad for the machine (VAIOs are designed to force a hard shut-down at 105'C if I remember correct).

Have your F looked at; hope it goes well for you.
