ok, here is the history of my problem, sorry its long.

i have a sony vaio vgn-ns235j running visa home premium 64. the machine was dropped and wouldnt boot at all appearing there was a problem with the mbr.

i didnt have any recovery discs so i went and purchased one online and was able to bring up recovery options and was able to see that the files and directories were still on the drive. still i couldnt get the machine to repair the drive and it would only recognize it as (unknown) on unknown disk.

since i couldnt repair the drive i took it out and tried to access it in another machine. i could not do that in windows so i had to use linux. using linux i was able to backup some files.

the hdd being compromised i purchased a new one, installed it and went to load the recovery discs for the system to install windows on it. after disc one finishes and it asks for disc two, it wouldnt read disc two. it would only spit it back out and ask for disc two again.

so i place disc two into another machine and the files appear to be fine. i made a copy of disc two and tried that but still no joy. then something strange happened, the vaio stopped booting from the dvd drive.

no matter what i do i bios it will not boot off cd.

to get around that i put a visa recovery disc onto a thumb drive and i was able to get to the recovery options screen.

finally comes my question, how can i install windows on this machine?

heres what i have, i have the vaio recovery discs, i have a 8 gb thumb drive, i have an extra working 500 gb hdd that i can use as a bootable external. thank you for your time.

make a bootable USB drive, here's one site:

Install Windows 7 From USB Drive/Pen Drive

There are many others if you google it. (there's on article on MS's own site, but i cant find it atm) In any case, it sounds like your DVD drive also got damaged... you might want to look into it (maybe remove it and connect it to a desktop to see if the desktop can recognize/run things off it)

ill give these things a try but as many of you may know, sony recovery discs arent truly windows disc. also the recovery discs are spread out over 3 separate discs. how would that affect the process with the 3 different ISOs?
i assume this process will work on an external hdd because i dont have a thumbdrive large enough to hold the 3 recovery discs.

thanks for the replies, appreciate it.

Oh yeah good point. The only way forward here is to find someone with a Vista disk... I don't think it's possible to extract the OS from the recovery disks. But the underlying problem here seems to be a broken DVD drive (if not a broken mobo, which is worse) As i stated before, you might want to try to connect it to another computer and see if it recognizes the drive (and if the drive will function). If it works, then possibly a broken sata connector on the mobo.

Another option is to upgrade to Win 7 if you want, then just make a bootable usb key out of that. I wish you luck.
