I tried to wipe the lcd lid(the metal back) with these alcohol screen cleaning wipes and it left some wierd residue/marking on it... very very faint, but still...
Is there any way to clean the lid? anyone wiped it with any thing before?

i cleaned mine with alcohol screen cleaning wipes and then used a soft cloth to wipe it clean..
didn't pay a lot of attention to the cover though
the screen is the hardest part to clean... i still havent figured out how.. whatever i use to clean the screen, it leaves marks on it... -
dell manual clearly says never to use alcohol to wipe anything on ur laptop as alcholhol induces fading of paint is dangerous to anti glare coating of the display. didnt u read ur instruction manual before cleaning (or doesnt sony give instructions on cleaning the system). my recommendation would be to use very sift microfiber cloth moist with water

please dont use alcohol to clean 'glossy screens' as it is harmful to the anti glare coating on the screen. i donno exactly about the old TFT displays
-
A lightly damp (H2O) cloth works very well.

and no... my laptop didnt come with any discs or any manual... nothing at all..
just a quick setup guide and the laptop -
the dell manual says (pg 180, inspiron 1420 user manual)
"To prevent damage to the antiglare coating, do not wipe the display with soap or alcohol"
it also says
"To clean your monitor screen, lightly dampen a soft, clean cloth with water"
"Wipe the keyboard, computer and monitor plastics with a soft cleaning cloth moistened with a solution of three parts of water and one part dishwashing detergent"
i donno about other kinda systems however they wont differ much especially in case of the glossy screen. -

yeah i tried cleaning the screen with a wet soft cloth and it left tons of marks on the screen..
I will go check out the iClean thing. -
I've also heard Shaggymac's OptiMist Prime works well too, and it's a bit cheaper but with less quantity and no microfiber cloth.
-
thanks for the suggestions!
-
ive always used alcohol in gel and never had any problems with it...
:S -
u maynot be using a glossy screen or ur antiglare has screwed up
-
meh.. i havent noticed any difference, and i did this to glossy screens (hp, vaio)

Use the following:
De-Ionized or Distilled and Mineral Free water
A microfiber cloth
You shouldn't use tap water as it has minerals that can streak on the screen/residue. -
these screen tissues where a waste of pocket change since you'd need to pass over the screen with a dry tissue afterwards anyway to remove drying marks, so my best experience comes from a (moisted) micro fiber household tissue or a (sun-)glass cleaning tissue..although that last one doesn't hold moist well, so I use it to remove dust and the micro fiber to remove staints and such. Thanks for the advise on distilled water, Duke2007
