    Hey

So I'm on windows 7 rc1 and I'm having trouble disabling the CDrom drive.

I see the icon in the tray but when i right click and power it off, it just doesnt power off...

Is there a more direct way to turn it off?

Just tryina save a bit of battery

Right click 'Computer' in the Start Menu and select properties.
Select Device Manager and then navigate to the CD drive.
    Right click and select 'Disable'.

I have the new Z51 Series and there is no Sony software method of switching off the CD drive that I can find. The Device Manager is the method Sony Telephone Support in the UK provide for switching off the CD Drive.

How much battery does it consume when it is not even spinning?

By my knowledge turning off a device in the windows Device Manager doesn't actually prevent it from using power. Can't look back on my source, as the forum it was brought up at is gone for some months now.

So, perhaps you'll want to do some more background checks on that advice from the telephone support.

Well that wouldn't surprise me. It is just the only way Sony have of disabling the CD Drive. To find it is like the bluetooth which consumes power regardless of state is not a surprise. Sony have always been at the leading edge of producing technically capable well designed laptops, but their software engineering and physical design are notoriously crap. Sony's attitde to this is generally GFY. I figured everyone already knew this. I bought my laptop knowing that Sony were crap.

My question remains, how much power DOES it consume when it is not spinning?

search this forum for the devcon utility someone made. It's for SR but may work on your Z. It's basically a small gui that lets you toggle on/off all the devices.
