hello I'm sorta torn between a Sony and a Dell right now and desperately looking for any reason to push me one way or another. So I was just wondering if anyone has had horrible or great experiences. If not I'll assume Sony's don't break lol.

From all indications (never had to deal with them myself) Sony's customer service is fair to poor more often than not. If you're going Sony you would probably be best off purchasing from a reseller such as Portable One. Their customer service is par excellence and would probably offer a much better experience than dealing with Sony directly.

In the UK the extent of their customer service is a conversation with a Supervisor in the Tier 1 Tech Support department (the people you first speak to when you report a problem).

Moreover, you have to call back on a daily basis to get that conversation. After the 6th or 7th call back, they eventually figure your not going to give up and put you through. Attempts 1-5 will generally result in a promise of a call back the next day, with no call back ever being made.

Having searched their website for customer service contact details and asked a dozen tier 1 techs and 3 supervisors, I can reliably confirm they have no independant customer service department.

I'll leave it to you to decide how good a conversation with a supervisor in the department you are likely complainging about is worth. But I very much doubt anyone could describe this as an acceptible level of Customer Service.

I just got off the phone with Sony customer service and they were nothing like I have been told... THEY WERE AWESOME. My call was answered immediately and they helped me fix the problem in less than 10 mins. I found them to be very helpful and welcoming. When I was having problems, I at first hesitated to call because of all the horro stories I have heard about Sony. I was very surprised on how well it went. With this one call, I can tell you that their service is already better than what I have had with gateway. Here two thumbs up to Sony in this case!
