what tz model? The 150 has ONE screw to remove to take out the old ram and you put in the new ram. Dunno about the older one.

look into your manual to open the ram compartment. Ram is a user upgradable part...so it should not void your warranty.

The compartment is on the bottom of the laptop, it is the only thing easily replaceable/upgradeable. I really don't think it voids the warranty.

Just unscrew that one screw that secures the ram compartment, thats it. Upgrading the ram is extremely easy.

The other screws are to get into the rest of the computer and upgrade things like the hard drive and wireless card and such, much harder and delicate tasks.

i finally did it. it was kinda tough at first, i dint know how to remove the ram. i kinda pulled the left and right side a bit to the side to unlock it and tilted it about 30 degrees.

after removing it, i had problems fitting it in! lol then i kinda stuck it back at 30 degree angle and pushed it down. i kinda forced it a bit because it was quite tight.

now my system is a bit snappier, not as sluggish

it seems that after upgrading the ram, my mouse pad seems better. my mouse pad used to suck, like it seems to do funny things and click on stuff that i didnt want and it was very sticky, like when i try to move the cursor to left, it wont.

I though I read somewhere that the TZ has just 1 slot for RAM...how did you upgrade it? You mean you removed the existing DIMM and installed the new one?

Yes. Note that the 945GML chipset can address only 2GB so, while the combined total of RAM on board and in slot may be more than 2GB, only 2GB is usable (same applies to the G series).

945GML ok. But what chipset is there in my laptop? SZ483N/C? Is it just 945G? Because my laptop sees 3.2GB RAM!

This is because you are running a 32-bit operating system, 32-bit acknowledges up to 3.2gb of ram. To get access to the full 4gb, you need to install a 64-bit OS.

The 945 chipset recognizes a little bit over 3GB.

    gopz - your 400 series SZ has a 945 chipset. The 500/600/700 SZ's have a 965 chipset and can recognize 4GB of ram with a 64-Bit OS.

Not sure if you are clarifying or disagreeing.

The normal 945 chipset can handle 4GB. It's the 32-bit versions of Windows which can handle a bit over 3GB.

However, the 945GML chipset is a lower power version which has a ceiling of 2GB.

Ok I just want to make sure...is the screw that is pointed out in the picture the correct one, for changing RAM?

Also, where did you purchase your 2 GB RAM?

Yes, the arrow pointing to the screw in Sprite's post is the correct screw you need to remove to open up the compartment holding the RAM.

Not sure who you are talking to but you can buy 2GB RAM sticks applicable for the TZ at places like newegg or frys.com. Search pricegrabber for some cheap prices...

if/when you have to send your laptop in for repairs, they will not fix it if you don't have "Sony certified" ram. so just swap out the ram b4 sending it in.

Or, put in other words, the warranty is for the computer as supplied. So keep the original parts for the duration of the warranty.

Does this apply to the bloatware, as well? If I performed a semi-clean install on my TZ, and I want to return it to Sony for repairs, do I have to put the bloatware back on?

No. You can run any operating system you want, and any programs you want without voiding any warranties. If you do call for warranty support, you may be asked if you have done a system restore, but they cannot deny warranty for changing the software configuration on your computer.

If you have a problem which cannot be specifically identified as being with the hardware then you may be required to reinstall the factory image of the software in order to confirm that you still have a problem and it is not caused by something in your software installation. BSODs are an example of this since they can be caused by either hardware or software malfunction.

But if the keyboard is broken, the HDD fails diagnostics, etc, then the software installation is irrelevant. Dell addresses this problem by making the drivers CD bootable and a user can then run various diagnostics direct from the CD and independent of the software installed on the HDD.
