i bought an sz430 from J&R two weeks ago and returned it the next day i received it because:
    1. the fan nosie fxxking kills me, it just never stopped and soooo annoying
    2. the batt life is tooooo short, only lasted for less than 3 hrs
    3. man, the hottest laptop ive ever used....
    4. screen flashes when windows starts (its not like that kind of "normal" flash)
    5. i had to adjust the brightness everytime i logged in

i currently have a 2-yr old powerbook and 4-yr old HP laptop. both of them works really well - no fan noise, really quite; not hot even running for hrs.

altho ive never used any vaios, i dont think vaio's supposed to have that many of problems for its high price (yeh, we are paying more for the design than the quality).

i ordered an sz650 and it'll be arrived tonite. i really have no idea if all those problems i had with 430 will be solved with this updated/lastest SZ model. if not, i dont think im gonna keep in faith with sony and ill just go get a thinkpad 61.

Sounds good. Exercise your consumer rights. You have the money, and they want the money.

Battery life being short? 3 hours really isn't that short when running Vista...and adjusting brightness everytime you login? That's a setting that YOU have to change under power settings

Was your power setting set to optimized? If not that could be your 1-3.

well, i just returned it the next day so i didnt really have a chance to "play" it and figure out more sys configs. HOWEVER, i DID try the fan setting (level 1-5) but it totally DID NOT work! i also called Sony, lv1 support told me the same thing and lv2 suggested a return.

for short batt life, i got disappointed just because SONY claims to have 4+ hrs on their website (even for the standard model).

anyway, ill get the 650 tonite and hopefully i can get ride of the troubles i had

    Actually, it's listed as:

    Estimated Battery Life
    2.0-4.5 hours (Standard Battery)

That means you could get 4.5 hours depending on your usage. If you were watching a DVD with the brightness turned all the way up, you probably won't get more than 2.5hrs. If you were word processing with the brightness adjusted to half, I'm sure you'll get over 4 hours.

Oh yeah, regarding the screen flash issue... there is a fix posted for that not too long ago. Linked here.
