Use a DVD install disk, or make a bootable USB stick. The installation from the CD take between 30 minutes to 1 hours. In an old system it should take 1 hour or more. using a USB stick should reduce installation time since reading from USB drive is faster than reading from a DVD.

Win7 is likely to detect most of your hardware. If it doesn't you can still use your Vista drivers with Win7. Please note that 32 bit drivers will not work on Win7 64 bits. for that you'll need 64 bit drivers.

The first place to look for the drivers is sony's website. If you want more up to dates drivers you can downloaded from the components manufacturer websites. For instance if you have an ATI graphics go to the ATI website and download their driver for notebooks.

You can use one of the following freeware to know the components in your laptop: SIW or PC Wizard.

3- any advices regarding of switching from Vista to Windows7..
Not really. Overall Win 7 feels much faster than Vista. It is almost as fast as WinXP though XP still has the edge. Since you have an old laptop, consider upgrading the RAM to 1 GB or more before installing Win7.

One thing though, i've noticed that I can run some old programs designed for WinXP in Vista but I can't run them in Win7. Microsoft provides a virtual machine allowing to emulate WinXP inside Win7. Unfortunately this virtual machine can only be installed in Win 7 Pro, Business, and Ultimate. If you don't have any of these 3 versions the alternative is to grab an old installation disk of Win XP and install a virtualisation program like virtual Box (can be downloaded from here) to run those old programs. If you don't have a WinXP CD you can buy one with its key from ebay for quite cheap. To install a virtual machine it is good to have 2 GB of RAM or more.

4- Fn must work with both speed and stamina modes.
not sure what do you mean. are you referring to the 'Fn' key?
Most standard things such as changing the screen brightness and the volume are OS independent. These functions are usually built in the BIOS, so Win7 will be able to detected them and handle them correctly. Sometimes, some non standard Fn functions are controlled with a software (for instance controlling the multimedia buttons on Toshiba satellite laptops). In these cases you'll need software to use them. Try the Vista version of the software in Win7. If it doesn't work, look for a Win7 version in Sony's website. It is likely that Sony uses the same software for various laptops.

P.S. I've installed not long ago Win7 on an Acer TravelMate 290E. This laptop was made in 2004. The only thing that didn't work for me was the aero effect since the laptop's integrated graphics card was too weak to handle it :). I didn't need to install any drivers since Win7 was able to detect all the hardware.
