    Hi,

i have Vaio Duo i7-3517U and feel very uncomfortable working in CAD\CAM software, especially Inventor. Even working with simple parts and switching between ribbon panels is very slow.

However, earlier everything was OK and i feel comfortable working with complex objects but reinstalling windows did not give me any profit.

I think is that some hardware issue or maybe there was some windows update which had had a performance hit?

    Thank you

Try running HWinfo64 (or even just the task manager) while doing your CAD, and see what your CPU utilization % is. That would at least confirm whether the CPU is the bottleneck or if it's a software issue.

You should consider this CPU is Ultra Low Voltage, so even it is i7, it won't have full power as other bigger laptop.
I would guess, you have either T or Duo 11.

    Yeap - that's why there's a 'U' behind the cpu designation i7-3517 U - I believe that's for Ultra low voltage

i7 ULVs aren't that bad... It should perform roughly on par with a 35W i5

However, it would pair with integrated graphics which is Intel HD 4000 and graphics power might also no be powerful as dedicated graphics card for graphics intensive program.
Also, consider upgrade to SSD (if you don't have one) to get better throughput.

Sorry for a delay and thank you guys for a reply.

Yeap, i have duo 11 and SSD also pre-installed but however it does not have as much power as i expected for $2500 laptop (ultrabook, sorry). Simple tasks like sketching, adding features are not so bad but when it comes to visualizing, or even turning shadows on i began to miss my home Dell m6600 :) I do not even try simulation products as its a bad idea for my duo11

512GB is sweet but they charge too much for it. I got mine for over a grand less than yours.
Anyway, Duo may not be fit for graphics intensive apps such as adobe since it is ultralow voltage and Intel graphics.

Yeah that doesn't sound correct. On my Duo everything is nice smooth and fast even with large files. It is definitely smoother and faster now than with my older Vaio Z13 with the NVidia chip where it was struggling sometimes but much better now with the Duo (I'm using PDSS 2014). Switching between the ribbon panels is also super fast.

Maybe in Inventor check Options - Hardware (set to Performance). In AutoCAD type 'hardware acceleration" into the search/help box, or contact the Autodesk forum or tech support where they may know how to reset it. Or might have to uninstall everything, trim the leftover registry and folders (there's a help page on the Autodesk site to clear folders and registry for Inventor). Most important is we'll have to use the 2014 (not earlier) AutoCAD and Inventor versions with Win 8 on the Duo. Good luck.
